CHARLESTON THEATRE
GUILD PRESENTING
“THE BETRAYAL”
CHARLESTON, S. C. — "The
Betrayal,” Goeffrey Dowsett’s im
pressive drama of the Passion of
Christ, was presented by the
Lenten Theatre Guild at the
Gloria Theatre, in matinee per
formances, of the first two Sun
days of Lent, February 15 and 22.
Production was under the di
rection of Traynor Ferillo, former
ly associate director of the Clare
Tree Major Theatrical Productions
of New York, the National Classic
Theatre, and the Children's
Theatre.
Father Jerome C. Powers, assist
ant pastor of St. Patrick’s Church,
and a member of the faculty of
Bishop England High School, ap
peared in the play .as The Christus.
Murray Bennett, who has dis
tinguished himself on the New
York stage and in theatres
throughout the nation, whose
career began under George Arliss,
noted star of stage and screen,
played the role of Judas.
In addition to directing the pro
duction, Traynor Ferillo was seen
in the role of Pontius Pilate.
Stella Rigby Sottlle, who will be
remembered for her portrayal of
the Blessed Mother in “Pilate and
the Cross, last year, was cast as
Claudia, the wife of Pilate.
The full cast numbered about
thirty, many of whom have had
previous experience on the stage
and on radio programs.
“The Betrayal” is a religious
spectacle, with elaborate costum
ing and brilliant stage settings en
hancing the beauty of the produc
tion. Its presentation in Charles
ton was sponsored by the
Parent-Teacher Association of the
Cathedral School, and a percent
age of the proceeds will be donat
ed to the Bishop England High
School Building Fund.
Almost every color imaginable
was used in costumes of silk, sat
in, velvet brocade and damask
materials, with gold and silver
ornaments adding brilliant touch
es. All of the costumes, except
those of the Roman soldiers, were
made in Charleston, under the di
rection of a committee which in
cluded Mrs Joseph Rabb, Mrs. G.
Humphrey Igoe, Mrs. G. W. Aimar,
Mrs. John Shcedy, and Mrs.
George M. Traynor.
Tlie two stage settings added
to the attractiveness of the pro
duction. The first, act scene rep-
resented the council room of the
court in Jerusalem. Heavy vel
vets and brocades were draped
over the decorative furniture, and
the background was of silver and
rust-colored drapes. The second
scene in the throne room of Pon
tius Pilate was designed to show
(he spaciousness of the Homan
palace. Gold and blue satin
drapes were centered with a wide
arch of gold and broad steps led
to a balcony facing the hill of
Calvary.
The east included Father Je
rome C. Powers, G. Humphrey Igoe,
William S. Walker, Harry Gianaris,
Traynor Ferillo, Stella Rigby Sot-
tile, James Igoe, Murray Bennett,
Peter Theos, Albeit Peale, Ruford
Bolchoz.John Prioster, Lawrence
Terry Grier Skinner, Bill Mims,
Joseph Cisa, Vyvian Williams,
Louis Tempests, John Duffy, An
tonia K. Manos, Samuel Hanvey,
Joseph Trott, William Heming
way, George Traynor, B. P. Can
non, H. C. Goode, Sam Payne,
A. C. Due.
Trumpeters, under the direction
of J. E. McElmurray, company
commander of the Citadel band,
were of great dramatic value in
the production. 1
