John J. Cooley
Dies in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga.—John J.
Cooley, well known Savannali
business man, died on February
4, following a heart attack. Funeral
services were held at the Sacred
Heart Church.
For many years, Mr. Cooley was
with Golden's Jewelry Store after
having owned and operated his
own business for a number of
years.
Mr. Cooley graduated from
Benedictine Military School, and
in the years following World War
served as assistant coach of the
football team at the school.
He is survived by a son, John J.
Cooley, Jr.: two sisters, Miss Helen
Cooley and Miss Gertrude Cooley;
two brothers, Peter M. Cooley and
Michael T. Cooley, and a number
of nieces and nephews.
JOHN HENRY COLLINS
DIES IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga.— John Henry
Collins, retired city engineer, who
died February 19, were held at
the Cathedral of St. John the
Baptist.
Mr. Collins is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Lillie D. Collins; five
daughters, Miss Mary Collins, Mrs.
Clyde Stafford, Mrs . Elizabeth.
Stafford, Miss Lille M. Collins,
Mrs. J. W. Lee, all of Savannah; a
sister, Mrs. Mary McCann; a broth
er, David Collins, Lowell, Mass.,
and six grandchildren

FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for Mrs. Maria W. Sexton,
who died February 19, were held
at the Cathedral of St. John
the Baptist.
Mrs. Sexton was for many years
active in the work of the Cath
olic Women’s Club and the Daugh
ters of Isabella. She is survived
by a son. William H. Sexton, and
a number of cousins.

FUNERAL IN COLUMBUS
COLUMBUS, Ga. — Funeral
services for Mrs. Goldie G. Bough,
wife of Williams S. Bough, who
died February 9, were held at the
Church of the Holy Family, Fath
er Herman J. Deimel officiating.
Mrs. Bough was born in Co
lumbus, August 29, 1909, the
daughter of Walter E. Gainous
and Mrs. Louis Kennedy Gainous.
She is survived by her husband,
her mother, Mrs. Walter E. Gain
ous; three sisters, Mrs. Jack Whit
tington, Columbus, Mrs. Wayue
Thurmond, Thomaston, and Mrs.
Everet DeLong, Augusta; two
brothers, Clifford Gainous and
William Gainous, both of Colum
bus; several aunts and uncles,
among them being Mrs. James R.
Bryant, Mrs. J. T. Desse, and Mrs.
A. Y. Thompson, all of Columbus.

DIES IN ALBANY
ALBANY, Ga.—Funeral services
for C. E. Sawyer, who died Feb
ruary 11, were held at St. The
resa’s Church.
Mr. Sawyer, a resident of Al
bany for eighteen years, is surviv
ed by his wife, the former Miss
Sarah Dozier, of South Carolina;
a daughter, Miss Ruth Sawyer; a
son James Sawyer; his mother,
Mrs. J. M. Sawyer, all of Albany;
and two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Odum,
Brunswick, and Mrs. C. C, Bar-
row, Atlanta.
VICTOR ANTHONY
DIES IN ROME
ROME, Ga.—Funeral services
for Victor Anthony, who died
February 2, were held from St.
Mary's Church.
Mr. Anthony, a native of Italy,
came to the United States in 1909.
After residing in Chicago for a
year he came to Rome, where he
has since made his home. He re
tired from business several years
ago and has been devoting his
time to the management of his
real estate holdings.
He is survived by his wife; a
daughter. Mrs. William B. Kelly;
a son, Horace Anthony, and two
grandchildren.
JOHN C. DEIHL
DIES IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO. 111. — Funeral ser
vices for John C. Deihl, formerly
of Atlanta, who died on January
14, were held at St. Mel’s Church.
Mr. Deihl is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Minnie Deihl. eleven
sons and daughters, twenty-five
grandchildren, seven great-grand
children.
Among the sons who survive
Mr. Deihl are Edward J. Deihl, of
Atlanta, Ga.; John C. Deihl, Char
lotte, N. C.; and Father Joseph
Delhi, S. M., of the Vicariate
AoostoUc U the Samoa Islands.
THOMAS A. HARDEE
FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for Thomas Anthony Hardee,
victim of a tragic fishing trip off
Wilmington Island, were held
January,27 at the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist.
Mr. Hardee, who was born in
Savannah October 1, 1914, attend
ed the Cathedral School and Bene
dictine Military School, and was
a painter before entering the
Army with the outbreak of World
War II. He served overseas with
the Seventh Armored Division in
the campaign of Northern France,
the Ardennes, the Rhineland and
central Europe. Holding the rank
of sergeant, he was a medium tank
commander and a gunner. He
was awarded the Purple Heart
for injury received when his tank
exploded, and gained the Bronze
Star medal in Holland taking a
tank 'dozer and clearing frozen,
snow-filled roads ahead of ad
vancing American columns, in the
face of mines and enemy fire.
He is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hardee; four
sisters, Mrs. Seaborn S. Griffith,
Mrs. D. G. Holland, Mrs. Mildred
Holland and Mrs. F. S. Moreno; a
brother, W. A. Hardee; an uncle
and aunt, Mr. and Mrs.'E. R. Har
dee, and several nieces, nephews
and cousins, all of Savannah.
JOHN HALEY
DIES IN ELBERTON
ELBERTON, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for John Haley, who died in
Elberton, where he was a mem
ber of St. Mary’s parish, were hold
in Granitevills, Vt, at St. Sylves
ter’s Church, with Father Joseph
H. Dussault officiating.
Born in Canada, Mr. Haley mar
ried Miss Anna Comsikey, at Gran-
iteville in 1904. His wife, a son,
several nieces and nephews sur
vived him.
Since 1920, Mr. and Mrs. Haley
made their home in Georgia,
where he was identified in the
granite industry, operating his own
quarry for a number of years.

RALEIGH, N. C.—Bishop Vin
cent S. Waters of Raleigh has an
nounced that through the genero
sity of Mr. and Mrs. Michael
Meehan, of New York, the attrac
tive piece of property, the former
Meehan home at the noted winter
resort, Pinehurst, N. C., and the
property has been converted in a
Retreat House for women.
The imposing residential struc
ture which was formerly the Mee
han's winter home, is located on a
triangular lot of about an acre,
next to the Sacred Heart Church.
The house contains about twenty
rooms and is well suited to its
new purpose. Much of the furn
ishings have also been donated
by Mr. and Mrs. Meehan and the
grounds are beautifully landscaped
with trees and shrubs into gardens.
The Retreat House will be con
ducted by Sisters of the Third
Order of St. Francis, of Maryville,
Mo.
Tlie new property has been en
titled ’’Maryhurst Retreat House
for Women,” and it will have a
permanent chapel and a regular
scheduled of Closed Retreats
throughout the year from Friday
afternoon to Sunday afternoon.
The Retreats will be conducted by
priests of the various Religious
Orders and secular priests. The
first Retreat was held January
2-4.
Dominican Missionary
at Port Wentworth
Church for Novena

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Father Mar
tin D. Burke, O. P. of the Do
minican Mission Band with head
quarters in Columbia, S. C., con
ducted a Novena in honor of Our
Lady of Lourdes at the Church
of Our Lady of Lourdes, at Fort
Wentworth, from February 1 to
February 11.
Father Burke, who conducted a
Mission for this parish last year,
was invited to return this year
to conduct the Novena by Father
Dan J. McCarthy, the pastor.
