DIOCESAN MODERATOR OF NCOS VISITS COLUMBUS—Monsignor T. James McNamara, of
Savannah, moderator of the National Catholic Community Service for the Diocese of Savannah-
Atlanta, is pictured on a recent visit to the NCCS Club in Columbus. Monsignor McNamara in
spected the club and discussed its operation with Louis C. Kunze, president, and William Fortson,
treasurer of the local NCCS committee; Richard Fisher, executive secretary of the club, and Father
Herman J. Deimel, the local moderator. Pictured above, left to right, are Mr. Fortson, Mr. Kunze,
Monsignor McNamara, Father Deimel and Mr. Fi sher. The club was operated by the NCCS as a
member agency of the United Service Organizations until December of last year, when the USO
was dissolved. The Administrative Board of the National Catholic Welfare Council deemed it neces
sary to retain certain clubs in the areas of permanent military installations and veterans hospitals, so
the club in Columbus has remained in operation as a recreational center for service men and women
stationed at Fort Benning.

Entertaining Young
Soldrs From North
(Special to The Bulletin)
COLUMBUS, Ga—That sweet
Southern drawl of Columbus miss
es has taken Fort Benning's New
England colony by storm, and the
new seventeen and eighteen-year-
oid recruits, most of them from
Massachusetts, New York and
points north, profess to be com
pletely intrigued by “the way you
all talk.”
Such is the report teen-age
hostesses at the recreational cen
ter here where the Army-Navy
YMCA has combined forces with
the NCCS to provide dances, en
tertainments, picnics, game nights
and other activities, social and
athletic for the boys in uniform,
many of them only a step away
lrom high school proms.
One of the biggest problems, ac
cording to Miss Nancy Anne
O’Keefe, assistant executive sec
retary of the NCCS, is finding
enough qualified junior hostesses.
“The girls seem to feel,” she
stated, ‘ that the war is over and
their help is no longer needed.
But now, with all the teen-age
boys in the service, their help is
needed more than ever before.
’ “We have more than a hundred
hostesses, which is quite a few.
But when you consider that we
are giving a picnic Sunday with
over four hundred young recruits
signed up, why double our mem
bership would- still be too few.
All of the activities are chap
eroned by adult volunteers and on
several occasions there have been
some mother-daughter combina
tions, with .mother acting as a
senior and daughter as a junior
hostess.
Colonel Onto Bragan, special
service officer at Fort Benning,
commented that the military au
thorities regard the club as a big
addition to post recreational fa
cilities.
Father Herman Deimel, pastor
of Holy Family Church, is mod
erator of the NCCS Club, and the
committee includes Louis C.
Kunze, chairman; William Fort
son, treasurer; M. G. Murray, Jr.,
secretary, and W. G. Bridges, Rich
ard H. Fleming, Vincent McCau
ley. Mrs. W. B. Scanlon, Mrs.
G. W. Burke and Colonel Bragan
as board members.
