Catholic Laymen’s Association
Convention Resolutions
The following resolutions, pre
sented by a committee composed
of Mrs. John Byrne, Columbus;
Mrs. Madeline Rung, Americus;
Mrs. William Knapp. Decatur; Mrs.
L. A. Valenti, Darien; Mrs. Mar
shall Wellborn, Rome; S. F. Mc
Cann, Douglas; Thomas J. Griffin,
Marietta; Harvey Hill, Atlanta,
and under the chairmanship of
Robert A. McCormick, K. S. S.,
of Albany, were unanimously
adopted at the convention of the
Catholic Daymen’s Association of
Georgia held in Brunswick:
RESOLVED That we express
our filial devotion to His Holiness
Pope Pius XII. as we pledge our
selves to pray for the intention of
the Holy Father with particular
fervor in these days of uncertain
ty, and as individuals and as an
association of Catholic Laymen.
We determine to do all in our
power to make fruitful in our
sphere of influence the program
of Catholic Action.
RESOLVED: That we express
our grateful appreciation to His
Excellency the Most Rev. Amleto
Giovanni Cicognani, the Apostolic
Delegate to the United States, for
his cordial and continued interest
in our Association.
RESOLVED: That we express
our sincere and heartfelt gratitude
to our Most Reverend Bishop,
whose leadership has been an in
spiration to the Catholic laity of
Georgia, whose gracious and pa
ternal assistance to the Catholic
Laymen’s Association has been its
greatest source of strength.
That while we are filled with
pride that the Holy Father has
chosen Bishop O’Hara for the im
portant position of Regent of the
Apostolic Nunciature of Romania,
there is nevertheless sadness in
our hearts that His Excellency
must for the time being, be absent
from his Diocese.
That everyone of us who is pres
ent here today regrets exceedingly
that Bishop O’Hara is not with us,
and we appreciate deeply his kind
message which discloses that lie is
with us in spirit as he is our hearts
and prayers.
That with humility and sincerity
we return to our beloved Bishop
the blessing be has so often be
stowed upon us—“God bless and
keep you”—to which we added the
supplication that God will grant
him a safe return back to Georgia
RESOLVED: That on llie occa
sion of the thirty-third annual
convention, members of the Cath
olic Laymen's Association of Geor
gia, express their sincerest good
wishes to His Excellency the Most
Rev. Michael J. Keyes, S. M., D.
D., and to thank him for his in
spiring leadership during his years
in The See of Savannah and his
continued interest in their work.
RESOLVED: That we sincerely
extend to His Excellency the Most
Reverend Bishop of Charleston
and to the Right Reverend Abbot-
Ordinary of Belmont, our grati
tude for their approbation and
support which makes possible the
circulation of The Bulletin in their
jurisdiction.
RESOLVED: That this conven
tion wishes to express apprecia
tion to Monsignor Joseph E. Moy-
lan, Vicar General of the Diocese
of S-avannah-Atlanta for his kindly
participation in our program, and
that we wish to assure him of the
loyal support of the Catholic laity
of Georgia in his administration
of the Diocese of Savannah-At-
lanta in the absence of our
Most Reverend Bishop.
RESOLVED: That we extend
our gratitude to the priests of
the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta,
the Diocese of Charleston and of
the Abbatia Nullius for their help
and cooperation in the work of
the Catholic Laymen's Association
of Georgia, and for the assistance
they have rendered in connection
with publication of The Bulletin.
RESOLVED: Thai we make a
formal expression of gratitude to
Father Gerald G. Walsh, S. J., our
guest speaker for his contribution
to the success of this convention.
RESOLVED: That we express
our warmest approval to the mem
bers of Savannah-Atlanta Diocesan
Council of Catholic Women, to
the Georgia State Council of
Knights of Columbus and their
affiliated councils for their worth
while efforts, and that we evi
dence this approval by our co
operation in every way possible.
RESOLVED: That we extend
greetings ot our good friend
Benedict Elder, whose wealth of
knowledge and wisdom of counsel
have ever been at the disposal of
the Catholic Laymen’s Association
of Georgia. We regret that he
has been unable to be with us for
several years, and we pray that
his health may be restored so he
will once more be able to be a
welcome guest at our convention.
RESOLVED- That we express
our grateful appreciation to the
officers and staff of the Catholic
Laymen’s Association of Georgia,
particularly to President Estes
Doremus, under whose able lead
ership the Association has passed
through two of the most fruitful
and progressive years in its liis-,
tory. We thank Mr. Doremus for
liis unselfish service and assure
him that he may lake pride in
the work which he lias done so
well for Christ and His Church in
Georgia.
WHEREAS, Miss Cecile Ferry,
of Augusla, who has served the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia faithfully and well, as a
member of its headquarters staff
in Augusta through all of its years
of most vigorous effort, from the
lime that it was first organized
until her retirement from active
duty this year; be it
RESOLVED: That the officers
and members of the Catholic Lay
men's Association of Georgia, in
convention assembled, publicly
make this expression of their un
dying gratitude to Miss Ferry, for
her contribution to the work of
the Laymen's Association, a con
tribution so great that only
Heaven can bestow upon her the
reward which she so richly de
serves.
RESOLVED: That the members
of the Catholic Laymen's Associa
tion of Georgia express their re
gret that it was necessary for C. A.
McCarthy, of Savannah, to tender
his resignation as a member of
the executive committee of the
Association on account of the
condition of liis health. Mr. Mc
Carthy has served the Laymen’s
Association faithfully for years, as
a member of its executive commit
tee since 1941, and prior to that as
a member of the important pub
licity committee. Further, be it
RESOLVED: That (lie members
of the Laymen’s Association, in
convention assembled, extend
their sincere and heartfelt good
wishes to Mr. McCarthy, with
fervent hope and prayers for his
speedy recovery.
RESOLVED: That we extend
our grateful appreciation to mem
bers of the Brunswick Branch,
who have followed the leadership
of their pastor, Father John Mer
cer, S. M., and their president,
Joseph L. Owens, in contributing
to the success of this convention,
and that we express our gratitude
to Mr. Louis C. Purdy, executive
secretary of the Chamber of Com
merce, for bis gracious welcome
and for participating in our pro
gram.
RESOLVED: That we gratefully
acknowledge the favor shown by
the Brunswick News in giving
such splendid publicity to this
convention.
RESOLVED. That wc offer our
thanks to the management of the
Oglethorpe Hotel for its fine hos
pitality and service which have
added so much to our visit to
Brunswick.
RESOLVED: That the mem
bers of the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia express
their gratification that the Holy
See has again selected a member
of the laity of the Diocese of
Savannah-Atlanta for special dis
tinction, as wc extend our con
gratulations to Miss Mary Mc
Grath of Griffin, upon whom His
Holiness Pope Pius XII has be
stowed the Papal Medal: ‘Pro
Ecclesia et Pontifico."
RESOLVED: That the members
of the Catholic Lapmen’s Associa
tion of Georgia express their grati
tude to Thomas J. O’Keefe, who
lias been recently resigned us
editor of St. Anthony's Catholic
News, in Atlanta, for liis fine .sup
port of the work of the Laymen’s
Association through the columns
of the parish publication of which
he served so well as editor, and
that we also recognize his service
to the Association during the years
which he headed our Atlanta
Branch as its president. In thank
ing Mr. O'Keefe, we also wish to
express our regret that due to a

Dean, of Charleston, S., C., recently commemorated the fiftieth'
anniversary of their marriage by attending a Mass offered at the
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston by their son,
Father Sydney F. Dean, of Greenville, S. C. Present in the
sanctuary were Bishop Emmet M. Walsh of Charleston; Monsignor
James J. May, Vicar General of the Diocese of Charleston; Mon
signor John L. Manning, D. D., Chancellor of the Diocese; Father
Louis Sterker, and Father Christopher Barry. Two other sons of
Mr. and Mrs. Dean, John J. Dean, Jr., and David L. Dean, served
the Mass. After the ceremony a breakfast was served at the Fort
Sumter Hotel, and in the evening there was a reception at the
Knights of Columbus Hall. Pictured above at the reception, with

and Sammy Toole and Kenneth
Odom, members of the Cub Scout
Troop.
The minstrel show cast, which
was headed by M. D. Kaney as in
terlocutor, included Mr. and Mrs.
Ed Ford. Mrs. Emmeline- Brant
ley, Mrs. Kendricks Morris, Mrs.
M. D. Kaney, Sr., Mrs. Louise
Savage, Melvin Kaney, Misses Peg

Following the performance, a
reception was held and members
of the parish and other friends
of Monsignor Smith extended
felicitations to him, and presented
him with a handsome walrus skin
overnight bag. Refreshments were
served by the ladies of the par
ish, assisted by the Sisters ot
Our Lady of Christian Doctrine,
who conduct the welfare center.

Laymen’s Association of Georgia
recognize the twenty-fifth anni
versary of their ordination to the
priesthood of five of our beloved
piresls of the Savannah-Atlanta
Diocese, four of whom are still
active in parish work.

of the Catholic Laymen's Associa
tion of Georgia, be it
RESOLVED: That the members
of the Catholic Laymen’s Asso
ciation of Georgia, in convention
assembled, record on the minutes
of this meeting an expression of
their profound gratitude to Mr.
Dessauer for his invaluable ser
vices, which have in so great a
measure made possible the pub
lication of The Bulletin.
RESOLVED: That the recom
mendation made by (lie executive
secretary with reference to meet
ing of local branches, the estab
lishment of new branches, the
promotion of the circulating
library and to increase the interest
of the Catholic youth.of Georgia
in our work, to be adopted.
RESOLVED: That this conven
tion authorize the appointment by
the President of a committee
which would be charged with the
duty of cooperating with state
and local officers in campaigning
for contributing members of the
Association.
RESOLVED. That we proclaim
our pride in The Bulletin and the
good which is accomplished
through its publication. It com
mands the respect and admiration
of both Catholic and non-Catliolic
wherever it is road. We urge all
members to aid in furthering its
circulation, and to mention The
Bulletin when extending patron
age to those who advertise in its
pages.
