Memorial Resolutions Adopted at the Annual Convention
of the Catholic Laymen’s Association of Georgia
The following Memorial Resolu
tions, presented by a committee
composed of Mrs. Joseph Ocampo,
Port Wentworth; Asa Kelly, Al
bany; Yancey McCalla, Americus;
Arnold Cook, St. Mary’s; Edward
P. Daly, Savannah; Manuel Boa,
Brunswick: David O’Hagan, St.
Simons Island; Frank Hanna,
Douglas, and under the chairman
ship of Richard H. Fleming, of
Columbus, were unanimously
adopted at the convention of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia, held in Brunswick:
WHEREAS: During the past
year, Bernard S. Fahy, of Rome, a
former president of the Catholic
Laymen’s Association of Georgia,
has been saddened by the death in
Washington, D. C., of his brother,
Joseph A. Fahy, be it
RESOLVED: That the members
of the Catholic Laymen's Associa
tion of Georgia place in the rec
ord of this convention an expres
sion of ouP sympathy to our for
mer president and the other mem
bers of the Fahy family.
WHEREAS: The members of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia are mindful that in the
death of Henry L. DeGive, of At
lanta. a founder of the Knights of
Columbus Council of that city,
and one of the community's busi
ness leaders, they suffered the
loss of one of their fellow-mem
bers whose interest and support
will be sadly missed, be it
RESOLVED: That we include a
memorial tribute to Mr. DeGive in
the records of this convention,
and that we extend our sympathy
to the bereaved members of his
family. *
WHEREAS: God has called to
his reward Abbot Frederic M.
Dunne of the Abbey of Our Lady
of Gethscmani, in Kentucky, to
whom is due the establishment of
a Trappist Abbey in Georgia, be it
RESOLVED: That we pray that

in the fruitfulness of the death of
Abbot Frederic as it has shared in
the fruit of his life of unselfish
service to God.
WHEREAS: In the death of
Prank X. Profumo, Columbus has
lost one of its most respected citi
zens and the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia, one of its
most devoted members, and a for
mer president of its Columbus
Branch, and
WHEREAS: Mr. Profumo was
outstanding among the Catholic
laity of Columbus, and his death
brings sorrow to the members of
the Catholic Laymen’s Association,
whose sympathy goes to his be
reaved wife and family, be it
RESOLVED: That this memo
rial be recorded in the minutes of
this convention and that a copy of
it be forwarded to his bereaved
wife.
WHEREAS: Those who are ac
quainted with the work of the
Catholic Laymen's Association of
Georgia know full well that the
Catholic women of Georgia have
played an important part in its
work, and
WHEREAS: It would be diffi-
eult to find among the Catholic
women of Georgia one who was
more devoted to the work of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association
than Mrs. May Bcrchmans Mas-
sehng. wife of J. W. Masseling, of
Atlanta, whose death look place
this year, and
WHEREAS: The entire member
ship of tire Catholic Laymen's As
sociation, particularly those who
had been privileged to know Mrs.
Masseling. who seldom failed to
attend .ie of the Association’s an
nual conventions, have suffered a
loss which is keenly felt, be it
RESOLVED: That this tribute
to her memory be inscribed in the
permanent record of the Lay
men’s Association, and that a copy
of it be forwarded to her bereav
ed husband, who has our deepest
sympathy.
WHEREAS: The Right Reverend
Monsignor Edward Dodwell, Offi-
cialis of the Diocese of Savannah-
Atlanta. has been saddened by the
death of his beloved Mother. Mrs.
Katherine Dodwell, of Philadel
phia, be it
RESOLVED: That the members
of the Catholic Laymen’s Associa
tion of Georgia in convention as
sembled, extend to Monsignor
Dodwell their profound sympa
thy.
WHEREAS: Dr. Victor Barbot,
mt Augusta, who for years was a
devoted member of the Catholic
Laymen's Association of Georgia
has been claimed- by death, and
WHEREAS: The charity of his
life, which found its expression
principally in his labors for the
poor and suffering through his
leadership in the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul, setting a noble
example, be it
RESOLVED: That this memo
rial to Dr. Barbot be spread on the
minutes of this meeting, and that
a copy thereof, with our sincere
sympathy, be sent to his bereaved
wife.
WHEREAS: The death of Wil
liam J. Ryan, of Savannah, re
moves from our membership rolls
another of the group of coura
geous Catholic laymen who gath
ered in Macon more than thirty
years ago to organize the Catholic
Laymen’s Association of Georgia,
and
WHEREAS, in his private life
and in the discharge of his duty as
official of Chatham County he
ever reflected credit upon the
Church, be it
RESOLVED: That, we, members
of the Catholic Laymen’s Associa
tion of Georgia, of which he was
one of the founders, express our
sympathy to the members of his
family, and record that expression
in the minutes of our annual con
vention.
WHEREAS, in the death of
James P. Flynn, one of the out
standing business leaders of At
lanta. a devout member of the
congregation of the Sacred Heart
Church in that city, and a member
of the Catholic Laymen's Associa
tion of Georgia, who had served
actively in its interest, our Asso
ciation has lost one of its ihost
valued members, be it
RESOLVED: That we make this
formal expression of our sorrow,
and extend our sympathy to the
members of his family.
WHEREAS, death has claimed
Miss Anne Reid, sister of a former
executive secretary of the Catho
lic Laymen’s Association of Geor
gia, and the members of this As
sociation wish their former execu
tive secretary to know that he has
(heir profound sympathy in the
death of his sister, be it
RESOLVED: That we give ex
pression of that sympathy in the
record of this meeting, and send a
copy of it to Richard Reid.
WHEREAS, since our last con
vention the Angel of Death has
called Miss Theresa Deignaa, of
Columbus, who for years had
demonstrated her interest in the
work of the Catholic Laymen’s
Association, be it
RESOLVED: That we place this
memorial to Miss Deignan in our
minutes as an expression of our
bereavement.
WHEREAS, in the death of Fa
ther Thomas L. Finn, • the Diocese
of Savannah-Atlanta lost one of
its most zealous and devoted
priests, one who had as a young
Catholic layman represented the
Catholic Library Association of
Savannah at the meeting i n Ma
con when the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia was found
ed, and
WHEREAS, as a layman, and la
ter as a ijriest, Father Finn was
ever actively interested in the
work of the Laymen’s Association,
and
WHEREAS, the Catholic laity of
Georgia mourning the loss of a
friend and counselor, do not sor
row as those without hope, be it
RESOLVED: That we pray that
his priestly soul may rest in peace
and that his priesthood will be
crowned with perfection in the
kingdom of heaven.
WHEREAS, in the death of Na
irn- Mansour, the parish of St. Pe
ter’s Church in LaGrange lost one
of its most faithful members, and
the Catholic Laymen’s Associa-

rick Campbell, of Atlanta, the
parish of St. Anthony Church
lost one of its most faithful mem
bers, and the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia an active

our sympathy to his widow and to
the other members of his family,

Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta.
GEORGIA INDUSTRIALISTS
HONOR KIRK SUTL1VE
SAVANNAH, Ga.—-Kirk Sutlive,
public relations manager of the
Union Bag and Paper Company,
has been elected president of the
Associated Industries of Georgia.
Mr. Sutlive, former newspaper
publisher and editor, was for some
years a member of the publicity
committee of the Catholic Lay
men’s Association of Georgia.

WHEREAS, the Diocese of Sa
vannah-Atlanta has suffered a loss
in the untimely death of Father
Edward McGrath, of the Home
Missioners of America, who had
come to Georgia to engage in
missionary work, and
WHEREAS, in death as in life
the purposes of Divine Providence
are fulfilled in ways beyond our
comprehensions, be it
RESOLVED: That though we
are aware that in the death of Fa-
thera McGrath the will of God
was made manifest, we still join
with the laity of the Statesboro
Mission, who came to know him
for his admirable spirituality and
charming personality, in sorrow
that a true friend of the Laymen's
Association is no longer in our
midst.
WHEREAS. John M. Harrison,
one of the founders of the Lay
men’s Association, and its first
secretary, has been saddened by
the death of his brother, George
Harrison, of Marietta, who was : ,
also a member of our Association,
be it
RESOLVED: That we extend
our sincerest sympathy to the be
reaved baother and other mem
bers of the family of George Har
rison, and record our expression of
sympathy in the proceedings of
this meeting.
WHEREAS, the death of Father
Ignatius Lissner, of the Society of
African Missions, ended a life
which was devoted in great part to
missionary effort among the col
ored people of Gt orgia, and his
priestly ministry was responsible
for the saving of many souls, be it
RESOLVED: That we inscribe a
tribute to the memory of Father
Lissner in these minutes as we
pray that his priesthood be crown
ed in Heaven where the dead who
die in the Lord rest from their la
bors. ,
WHEREAS: Reverend John
Bessmer, a priest of the Diocese
of Savannah-Atlanta, would have,
if he had lived, celebrated the sil-
.ver jubilee of his ordination to
the holy priesthood, be it *
RESOLVED: That we hold him
in particular remembrance in our
prayers lor the dead this year.
WHEREAS, during the twelve
months whicli have passed death

RESOLVED: That we express
in the minutes of this meeting our
sorrow at their passing, and offer
our prayers that their souls and
the souls of all the faithful depart

God, rest in peace.
Alumnae of Schools in
Augusta Hold Reunion
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Former gradu
ates of St. Mary’s Academy and
the Sacred Heart Aeademyt to
gether with friends of the Sis
ters of Mercy, met at the Sacred
Heart Convent to participate in
the annual “Birthday Party”—one
of the highlights of the program
of activity for the year under the
auspices of the Alumnae Associa
tion.
Old friendships with school
mates of long ago were renewed
and recollections of schooldays
back in 1885 were recalled by the
older members of the alumnae
who are still loyal to their Alma
Mater.
During the evening a musical
program was enjoyed and refresh
ments were served. The recep-
