CATHOLIC .READING ROOM AND LIBRARY IN CHARLESTON — The recently-opened Catholic
reading room and library, at Wentworth and St. Philip streets in Charleston, S. C., provides ref
erence works and latest other reading matter from Catholic sources. Staff members inspecting
some of the latest additions t® the library shelves are William Bum, president of the Newman
Club at the College of Charleston, and Mrs. Laurence Michel, while seated at the right are
Father Louis F. Sterker, assistant rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and Miss Mary
Stewart Allan, library coordinator. Hundreds of patrons have visited the reading room which
is steadily gaining in popularity. It is open each day during the week from 10 a. m. until noon
and from 5 until 9 p. m., and on Sundays from 3 to 6 p. m. The circulating library offers books

Club in Charleston
Elects New Officers

CHARLESTON, S. C. — Mrs.
John E. Seignious, Jr., is the new
president of the Catholic Women’s
Clt4), succeeding Mrs. Joseph F.
HanVey. Other officers for the com
ing year will be Miss Harriett Ma
son, first vice-president; Mrs. W.
C. Landolin, of Higeland Park,
second vice-president; Mrs.
Michael L. Runey, treasurer; Miss
Margaret Cordray, recording secre
tary, and Miss Mary Frances Con
don, corresponding secretary.
The election of officers was held
at a breakfast meeting at the
Francis Marion Hotel, following
the annual corporate Communion
of the club at the Cathedral of St.
John the Baptist, at a Mass cele
brated by Father Christopher Bar
ry, and with Monsignor James J.
May, rector of the Cathedral, de
livering the sermon.
The breakfast tables were dec
orated with silver vases of yellow
rosebuds and daisies. The speakers’
table was centered with a crystal
bowl of mixed spring flowers, and
the place cards were hand-painted
in white and gold. Following the
breakfast, the flowers were sent to
Father Louis F. Sterker, assistant
rector of the Cathedral, who was
a patient at St. Francis Xavier
Infirmary.
New members of the club, wel
comed at the meeting were Miss
Ellen Reiter and Miss Elizabeth
Reiter, members of St. Mary’s
parish.
Members who volunteered to as
sist the American Legion Auxiliary
in selling poppies were Misses
Cecile Rice, Ellen Tobin and Rose
Marie Kelly. Appointed as dele
gates to the luncheon-meeting of
the Charleston Deanery Council
of Catholic Women were Mrs.
Runey, Mrs. Seignious, Mrs. Louis
Gurno, Mrs. L. J. Keenan, Mrs.
Archie D. Willis and Mrs. Louis
Hoppmann.
Miss Charoltte Roempke, winner
of the clubs scholarship to the
College of Charleston for 1949-50,
and her mother, Mrs. L. J.
Roempke, were introduced by Miss
Alice Moran, chairman of the edu
cation committee. The scholarship
is offered annually to a girl grad
uate of Bishop England High
School.
It was reported at the meeting
that some six hundred articles of
infants’ clothing' were made by the
members and given to Sister Mary
Rita of Neighborhood House and
to other charitable agencies.
The club voted to send a child
to summer camp and to provide all
necessary clothing. Announcement
was made (hat Miss Betty Bower
and Miss Kitty Cleary had receiv
ed the bowling trophies awarded
by the club to the team its spon
sors.
THE SACRED CONGREGATION
of Rites, after preliminary exami
nation. has instructed Archbishop
John MeQuaid of Dublin formally
to begin the apostolic process of
Matt Talbot, it is reported from
Vatican City. This means that the
Sacred Congregation is satisfied
that the case is meritorious and de
serves further consideration.
