Graduation Exercises
At Mount de Sales
Academy in Macon

MACON, Ga.—Graduation exer
cises were held at Mount de Sales
Academy on June 2, with Father
Robert Bryant, S. J., pastor of St.
Joseph’s Church, offering the Mass
and presenting the diplomas, and
Father Walter Donovan, of Athens,
delivering the address to the grad-
[ uates.
The graduating class included,
Misses Jeanne Clark, Pasedena,
Cal.; Betty Berliner, Miami, Fla.;
Betty Johnson, Sparta; Betsy
Hogge, Dominican Republic; Ber
tha Campa, Havana, Cuba; Grace
Bryan, Sanford, Fla.; Marilyn
Roush, Atlanta; Mary Frances
Harper, Beverly Sherling, Kath
erine Sullivan, Gloria Tanner,
Theresa Sheridan, Ann Curry and
Eleanor Sherlin, Macon.
Officers of the Mount de Sales
Alumnae Association entertained
the graduates at a seated tea and
welcomed the new members of the
association on the eve of their
graduation. In addition to meih-
bers of the class of ’49, honor
guests were Mrs. Edward Sheridan,
of Macon, who was celebrating the
golden anniversary of her gradua
tion, and Mrs. Calder Garvin, who
was celebrating the silver anni
versary of her graduation from
Mount de Sales. The officers of
the association are Mrs. Edward
Hatcher, Mrs. Albert Gausch, Mrs.
Thomas Clark and Mrs. Frank
Huthnance.
With the closing of the school
year, members of the faculty of
Mount de Sales are leaving for
special summer courses of study.
Sister Mary Elizabeth and Sister
Fides will attend Barry College,
Miami; Sister Mary Barbara will
go to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for a
special musical course, and Sister
Mary Alma, Sister Gratia and Sis
ter Patricia will be doing graduate
study at the Catholic University of
America.
Bishop Emmet Walsh
Confirms Soldiers
At Camp Gordon
AUGUSTA, Ga.—On May 25,
Bishop Emmet M. Walsh of
Charleston administered the Sacra
ment of Confirmation of thirty-one
officers and men at Camp Gordon.
The ceremony was held in Theatre
No, 3, where a portable altar had
been erected on the stage.
Bishop Walsh was assisted in the
administration of Confirmation by
Monsignor Joseph G. Cassidy, rec
tor of the Cathedral of Christ the
King, Atlanta; Father Harold J.
Barr, pastor of St. Patrick’s
Church, Augusta; Father James
Buckley, S. J., of the Sacred Heart
Church, Augusta; Father Arthur
Weltzer, of St. MaryVon-the-Ilill
Church, Augusta; Father Joseph J.
Murphy, pastor of Our Lady of
Peace Church, North Augusta, S.
C., and by Lieutenant Edward Mc
Donald, Catholic chaplain at Camp
Gordon.
Chaplnin McDonald was cele
brant of the Mass, and the choir
was under the direction of Brother
Henry, of Boys’ Catholic High
School, Augusta.
Major and Mrs. Leo Miller acted
as .sponsors for those who were
confirmed.
Mrs. Henry Caver
Dies in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Mrs. Elizabeth
Lyons Caver, wife of Henry C.
Caver, member of one of Augusta’s
best known Catholic families, died
on June 14. Funeral services were
held at St. Mary’s-on-The-Hili
Church, with Father Arthur Welt
zer, officiating.
Mrs. Caver was the daughter of
the late Matthew Lyons and Mrs.
Helen O’Connor Lyons, both na
tives of Ireland.
She is survived by her husband;
two daughters, Mrs. Harry C. Gage,
Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Robert R.
Keim, Augusta; two sons, William
J. Caver and Henry C. Caver, Jr.,
both of Augusta; two sisters. Miss
f4ell B. Lyons, Washington, D. C.,
and Miss Nora Lyons, Augusta; a
brother, William A. Lyons, Augusta,
a granddaughter, and several nieces
and nephews.
MRS. T. C. CORTEZ
DIES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral serv
ices for Mrs. Adelen Cortez, wife
of T. C. Cortez, who died June 14,
were held at the Immaculate Con
ception Church, Father Joseph R.
Smith officiating.
Mrs. Cortez, a life-long resident
of Atlanta, is survived by her hus
band; a son, Richard Byron Cortez,
Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. Josie Sills,
Atlanta; three brothers, W. M.
Rowe, Sr., Elbert Rowe, and Gar
land F. Rowe, all of Atlanta, and
several nieces and nephews.
MRS. STELLA GLOVER
DIES IN SHARON
SHARON, Ga.—Funeral services
for Mrs. Stella Glover, who died
here on May 29, were held at the
Sacred Heart Church, Father John
Crean officiating.
Mrs. Glover was a native of Bos
ton, Mass., but for the last few
years had made her home with her
daughter, Mrs. Mary Russell. Mrs.
Glover is survived by her daugh
ter; a brother-in-law, Gary Glover,
of Sharon, two grandsons, and
other relatives.

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Funeral serv
ices for Mrs. Fannie Sykes Wil
liams, wife of Foster T. Williams,
who died May 28, were held at
St. Patrick’s Church, Father Pat
rick C. Connell officiating.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her
husband; two daughters, Mrs. John
F. Armstrong, of Augusta, and Mrs.
James Smiley, Montgomery, Ala.;
two sons, N. C. Williams, of Char
lotte, N. C., and Sykes Williams,
of Montgomery; her mother, Mrs.
Jennie Sykes, Savannah; three sis
ters, Mrs. W. L. Henry, Savannah;
Mrs. Jack Vidler, Valrico, Fla., and
Mrs. Aline Reese, Miami; a
brother, Thad Sykes, Savannah,
and thirteen grandchildren.
FREDERICK T. LENSE
FUNERAL IN CHARLESTON
CHARLESTON, S. C. —Funeral
services for Frederick T. Lense,
who died June 7, were held at St.
Patrick’s Church.
Mr. Lense, a native of Newport,
Ky., was a retired naval lieutenant.
He is survived by a son Frederick
T. Lense, Jr., and four sisters, Mrs.
George Huber, of Charleston, W.
Va., Mrs. Will Corroll, Miss Anna
Lense and Miss Merie Lense, all
of Cincinnati.

vices for Leslie Walter Smith, who

Mr. Smith is survived by two sis
ters, Mrs. James Baldwin, Atlanta,
and Miss Edna Marie Smith, Sa
vannah; a brother, Roy E. Smith,
Asheville, N. C., and several nieces
and nephews.
