Family of Displaced Persons
(Special to The Bulletin)
DOUGLAS, Ga—Coffee Coun
ty’s first Displaced Persons arriv
ed in Douglas on an Atlantic Coast
Line train from New York on the
last part of a trip that had begun
at Camp Weilbrunner, Germany.
Although their native land is Po
land, they had seen no part of
their homeland in several years.
The family was brought here to
work for Donnie Lott, and are al
ready settled on his 'farm near
Ambrose.
The Zahasewski family is made
up of the father, Michael, age 34,
and a ruddy faced worker who
smiles at his new happiness; his
wife, Stephania, a fair haired
woman of 26; little Michael, or as
he prefers to be called, “Mike,”
who is three and dark haired, and
Wolodymyr, who it 20 months old,
and blond. They speak only a few
words of English, but are rapidly
acquiring a knowledge of the lan
guage.
The family is being sponsored by
Mr. Lott, who was at the train to
meet the newcomers with Father
Frederick V. Gilbert, O. M. I., pas
tor of St. Paul’s Church in Doug
las, and Sister Mary Catherine, of
Our Lady of Peace School, Lake
land, who was here conducting a
summer vacation religious school.
Upon arrival, the family went
first to St. Paul’s Church to offer
thanks to Almighty God for grant
ing them the blessing of starting a
new life. in this land of freedom.
The trip to Ambrose by automo
bile was like a new adventure for
all the family.
Members of St. Paul’s parish
greeted the newcomers on Sunday
and made contributions of house?
hold articles to help them furnish
their new home.
At an ice cream party at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. James Nah-

periences in learning the English
language when he came to this
area as a stranger forty-five years
