President Appoints Jefferson Caffery
United States Ambassador to Egypt
(N. C. W. C. News Service)
WASHINGTON. -_(NC)— Presi
dent Truman has appointed as our
Ambassador to Egypt a noted
diplomat who first became
acquainted with the Near East
through the study of early Christ
ian writers.
He is Jefferson Caffery, who
until recently was Ambassador to
France and succeeds Stanton Grif
fis, who resigned from the Cairo
post because of ill health, Mr.
Caffery is fitted for the embassy
to the Egyptians in more ways than
one. A career diplomat of 38 years’
experience on s three continents, he
is known as a State Department
“trouble shooter,” and Egypt is a
focal.point in the present troubled
situation in the Near East.
The tall, dark, 63-year-old diplo
mat is also versed in Greek and
Aramaic, languages which he held
necessary because "these languages
held the key to an intimate know
ledge of the Word of God” before
his conversion to the Catholic
Faith in 1928.
“Before I embraced the Catholic
Faith,” Mr. Caffery said at one
time, “I made it a matter of con
science to peruse all of the Greek
Fathers. Why? Because I wanted to
kpow what took place at Ephesus
and Chalcedon. These Councils
we re decisive in their judgments
on the nature and personality of
our Saviour. I remember how eager
I was to grasp the full meaning of
‘theotokos’ as applied to the Virgin
Mary by the Council of Ephesus.
I found my answer in the Latin
word ‘deipara,’ God-bearer. And,
of course, anyone who reads the
Patristic authorities will go on to
try to master the Summa Theo-
logiea and Summa Contra Gentiles
of St. Thomas Aquinas.”
He also read St. Basil, St. Greg
ory of Nazianzen, St. Athanasius,
St. Augustine and St. Ambrose.
Mr. Caffery was bom in 1886
of Episcopalian parents in the deep
south at Lafayette, La. After Tu-
lane University he took post-gradu
ate studies at the Catholic Uni
versity of America here and passed
examinations for the diplomatic
service in 1911. Then came a color
ful and dynamic career as a minor
diplomat. First Caracas, Venezuela,
where he learned his Spanish, then
Sweden and Iran. In 1919 he hand
led protocol for President Wilson
at Versailles. It was there that re
ligious stirrings sent him frequent
ly to Notre Dame and the Made
leine.
Other important missions follow
ed—aiding Greek refugees in Asia
Minor in 1922, quake victims in Ja
pan in 1923 in association with the
Red Cross. And finally he was
promoted as Minister Plenipotenti
ary to Bogota, Colombia. Before he
went there, however, he consulted
a prelate at the Catholic Univer
sity about the so-called “implicit-
citation” passages in Genesis, and,
his doubts resolved, was baptized
to the Faith in New York.
His next post was the 1932 hot
spot—Cuba, whert he helped lay
the ground work of Secretary oi
State Cordell Hull’s first reciprocal
trade treaty. Then came his am
bassadorship to Brazil, where he

was “a thumping success.”
On November 22, 1937, at the
age of 51, he was married at Rio
de Janeiro to Miss Gertrude Mc
Carthy of Chicago, daughter of
Brig. Gen. Hugh McCarthy. The
ceremony was performed by His
Eminence Sebastio Cardinal Lema
and a blessing of Pope Pius XI was
sent by Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli,
then Papal Secretary of State and
now His Holiness Pope Pius XH.
His appointment as the first
American Ambassador to liberated
France came in 1944. Besides his
diplomatic affairs, Mr. Caffery was

operator in charitable works and a
frequent visitor of the offices of
