THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMENS ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA
THREE—A
Report of Sisters of Mercy at
St. Mary's Home, Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. — During the
twelve months which ended April
30, the Sisters of Mercy at St.
Mary’s Home cared for a total of
seventy-one girls. Eighteen of this
number were returned to their re
latives, nineteen new children
came to St. Mary’s, and the present
enrollment is forty-eight, with the
majority being from Atlanta, Sa
vannah and Augusta, but with Ma
con, Brunswick, St. Mary’s, Mil-
ledgeville, Way cross and States
boro also represented.
For the first time in the history
of St. Mary’s, day pupils from
Thunderbolt were admitted to the
first and second grades taught at
the home, because they could not
be accommodated at the Blessed
Sacrament School, due to the
heavy enrollment in the lower
grades there. Five girls from St.
Mary’s Home were in the eighth
grade at the Blessed Sacrament
School and high school students
from St; Mary’s attended St. Vin
cent Academy.
Two of the children, Harriette
Sikes and Ruth Emma Quinones
were received into the Church dur
ing the past year, and five of the
children received their first Holy
Communion at the Church of the
Nativity of Our Lord. Thunderbolt.
Members of the choir had an ac
tive year. They sang over the radio
on the Savannah Catholic Hour
Program on the third Sunday of
each month, at the first Mass of
fered in the new church of St.
James the Less, by Monsignor
Joseph E. Moylan, Vicar General
of the Diocese of Savannah-Atlan-
ta, and they sang with the choir
of the Church of the Nativity on
several occasions.
According to Dr. W. B. Crawford,
who has been physician to St.
Mary’s Home for forty-eight years,
the general health of the children
is exceptionally good. All of the
children were given physical ex
aminations at regular intervals,
and injections of serums against
diphtheria, whooping cough and
typhoid fever were given by Mrs.
Ava Gross, visiting nurse.
By way of relaxation, the chil
dren have enjoyed many motion
pictures, entertainments and par
ties provided for them by civic
clubs in Savannah and other
friends of St. Mary’s. The children
visit Camp Villa Marie for wiener
roasts and swimming frequently
during the summer months, and
often are invited to spend the day
with family groups at Savannah
Beaoh.
The Sisters and the children
wish to express their deep ap
preciation and sincere gratitude to
the many friends of St. Mary’s

Advisory Board of
St. Mary's Home
Meets in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Following
the annual meeting of the Female
Orphan Benevolent Society, a
special meeting of the Advisory
Board of the society was held at
the call of the Most Reverend
Francis E. Hyland, D. D., Auxiliary
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta.
In response to the request from
Bishop Hyland for recommenda
tions to fill vacancies in the mem
bership of the board, it was recom
mended that John G. Butler, T. T.
Dunn, Judge James P. Houlihan,
Daniel J. Sheehan and Henry B.
Brennan be considered for ap
pointment.
The special real estate commit
tee of the board, reporting through
its chairman, James H. McKenna,
stated that the property of the
society, on Habersham street,
known as old St. Mary’s Home, has
been offered for sale, and that
there had been a partial demoli
tion of the improvements on the
lot. A sale price of $35,000 had
been set on the property, but Mr.
McKenna stated that no action on
disposal of the property would be
taken without approval of the
board.
It was voted that Mr. McKenna
and his committee consider the al
ternative of turning the improve
ments on the lot over to the Dio
cese of Savannah-Atlanta for de
molition and storage and seeking
an estimate from a demolition en
gineer.
The board recommended that
the Sisters of Mercy in charge of
St. Mary’s Home hold an open
house annually at the home, in the
interest of public relations, and
