Communist Regime in Yugoslavia
Continues Attacks Against the Church
LONDON — (NC) — Yugoslavia
may have political .and ideological
differences with Soviet Russia and
other communist countries, but
when it is a question of. attack
ing and slandering the Holy See
the “united front” of Red regimes
is unbroken.
This becomes evident from an
article which seeks to show’ that
“the Vatican has 'consistently
ranged itself on the side of every
enemy the southern Slavas have
ever had.” The article winds up
by saying that “the clerical fas
cists of the whole world and the
Vatican are trying to make the
world believe that religion is be
ing persecuted in Yugoslavia” and
adds: “They are, however, confus
ing religion with its abuse for the
political ends of the Vatican.”
The article, written by a Pro
fessor Victor Novak, appeared in
the Yugoslav magazine "Medjuna-
rodna Politika” (International Poli
tics) and was broadcast in Czech
by the government-controlled Bel
grade radio station.
Those who closely follow de
velopments in the communist war
on the church point out that the
accusation of amusing religion for
political ends is an old stand-by
of communist propaganda. The
very same argument is constantly
used by the Red Chinese to justify
their arrest and expulsion of
foreign missionaries. It is em
ployed in Poland, Czechoslovakia
and Hungary to gain popular sup
port for the persecution of “un
patriotic priests” and the suppres
sion of Catholic institutions.
The article by Professor Novak
seeks to show, with a pretense
of historical learning, that since
the sixth and seventh centuries the
Holy See has been “prejudiced”
.against the southern Slavs—that
is, Bulgars, Serbs, Croats and Slo
venes. It revives the thoroughly
disproved charge that the Ustashi
(the Croat fascist group which, was
in power during the war) acted
“in direct liaison with the Vati
can.” It quotes Tito as saying that
“Rome has always been more
favorably inclined toward Italy
than toward our peoples.”
The article, it is pointed out
here, also demonstrates the hol
lowness of Yugoslav propaganda
efforts which seek to create the
false impression that there has
been a letup in the war of the
Tito regime against the church.
It rather shows that, together with
physical persecution of Catholics
and suppression of the most ele
mentary rights' of the church, the
ideological warfare against the
Holy See continues as heretofore.
