Father Alfred F. Kamler, Columbia
To Celebrate Silver Jubilee, May 29
COLUMBIA, S. C.—Father Al
fred F. Kamler, pastor of St. Jo
seph’s Church, will offer a Sol
emn Mass of Thanksgiving at St.
Joseph’s on May 29, in commemo
ration of the twenty-fifth anni
versary of his ordination to the
priesthood. The Most Reverend
John J. Russell, D.D., Bishop of
Charleston, will preside at the
Mass.
Officers of the Mass will be
Father Edward Keller, deacon;
Father Thomas Jellico, subdeacon,
and Father Allan R. Jeffords,
master of ceremonies. The sermon
will be delivered by Father A. A.
Plikunas.
The Mass will be followed by a
luncheon for the clergy at the
Wade Hampton Hotel, with Mon
signor Martin C. Murphy, as toast
master, and Father Maurice Shean,
C. O., as the speaker. In the eve
ning members of St. Joseph’s
parish will give a dinner and a
reception in compliment to Father
Kamler at tha Columbia Hotel.
Neill O’D. Bultman, president of
the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club will
be master of ceremonies, with
Bishop Russell as the principal
speaker.
Father Kamler was born in
Olean, N. Y., the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank H. Kamler. After his
graduation from Niagara Univer
sity, he completed his study for
the priesthood at the Seminary of
Our Lady of the Angels, at Nia
gara Falls, where he was ordain
ed on May 29, 1927.
His first assignment as a priest
of the Diocese of Charleston was
as assistant pastor of St. John the
Evangelist Church, Summerville,
and its missions at Walterboro, Cot-
tageville, Yonges Island and Cath
olic Hill. In May, 1929, he was
appointed assistant pastor of St.
Mary Help of Christians Church,
Aiken, with charge of St. William’s
Church, Ward, the Immaculate
Conception Church, Edgefield, and
other missions of Aiken.
In October, 1933, Father Kam
ler was made pastor of St. Peter’s
Church, Beaufort, and its missions
at Walterboro, Catholic Hill, Har-
deeville and Pinckney Colony,
while also serving as an auxiliary
chaplain for the U. S. Marine
Corps base at Parris Island, and as

director of Camp St. Mary’s, on
the Okatee River.
In 1940. Father Kamler was com
missioned in the Reserve Chaplain
Corps of the U. S. Navy, and in
February, 1941, was called to ac
tive duty at Parris Island. In
1942, he was promoted to the rank
of lieutenant commander, and in
April, 1943, left Parris Island to
serve overseas with the First Ma
rine Amphibious Corps, of the
Fleet Marine Force. In June, 1943,
he was made regimental chaplain
of the 2nd Marines, Third Marine
Division, and in March, 1944, was
made division chaplain after hav
ing been promoted to the rank of
commander.
After three operational cam
paigns, Father Kamler returned to |
the United States in January, 1945,
and was assigned to the U. S. Na
val Training Center, Sampson, N.
Y. In April, 1946. he was order
ed to the Separation Center, New
York City, and given a terminal
leave.
In July, 1946, Father Kamler was
appointed pastor of St. Francis de
Sales Church in Columbia, and
when that parish was succeeded
by that of the new St. Joseph’s
Church here, he continued as pas
tor.
Atlanta Council, Knights of Columbus
To Celebrate Fiftieth Anniversary
ATLANTA, Ga.—Jack Langley,
grand knight of Atlanta Council,
No. 660, Knights of Columbus, has
announced the following program
in connection with the observance
of the fiftieth anniversary of the
founding of the council, on May
24-26.
On May 24, from 2:30 to 6 p. m.,
there will be an open house at the
K. of C. Home, 1200 Peachtree
street, with all members of the
Order and their relatives and
friends invited to attend. From
6:30 to 7:30 p. m., there will be a
reception for members, their wives
or dates, Candidates for member
ship and their wives or dates are
also invited. From 8:30 to 11:30
p. m., there will be a dance, with
an orchestra to furnish the music.
On May 25, at 9:30 a. m., there
will be a Solemn High Mass at the
Immaculate Conception Church,
with Father F. M. Perry, S. M., as
celebrant. hTe sermon will be de
livered by, Monsignor P. J. O’Con
nor, director of the Shrine of the
Immaculate Conception, in Wash
ington, D. C.

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Harry L. Best
was elected grand knight of Patrick
Walsh Council, No. 677, Knights of
Columbus, to succeed William M.
O’Dowd, at a meeting of the coun
cil held on May 12, at the K. of C.
Home.
Other officers elected were De-

knight; Edward F. Guy, treasurer;
Theodore Conlon, chancellor;
Philip J. Tarantine, recording sec
retary; Ernest Dinkins, inside
guard; Joseph Hightower, outside
guard.
Trustees of the council are Mr.
O’Dowd, the retiring grand knight,
John T. Chesser and Joseph San
Fratello.

Joseph F. Lamb, of New Haven,
Conn., as guest speaker. Dwight
L. Hollowell is general chairman
of the committee in charge, with
Louis Baughnon, and chairman of
the reservations committee.
BEATIFIED — Blessed Rose
Venerini, foundress of the Congre
gation of Venerini Sisters, who
was beatified in St. Peter’s
Basilica, Rome, on May 4. Born in
Viterbo, Italy, in 1656, she died in
Rome in 1728. She is revered as a
pioneer in the methods of educa
tions. The congregation came to
the United States in 1909 and the
nuns work in the Archdiocese of
Boston, the Dioceses of Worcester,
Providnece, Springfield and Al
