TEN THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMENS ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA JUNE 21, 1952 Benedictine School Graduation Held in Savannah on June 5 SAVANNAH, Ga. — The con cluding event in the week-long celebration of the Golden Jubile,e of Benedictine Military School was the commencement held on June 5 at the Municipal Auditorium when the fifty graduates of the class of 1952 received their di plomas. The Most Reverend Francis E. Hyland, D. D., J. C. D.. Auxiliary Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, pre sided at the commencement ex ercises, at which the Right Rev erend Vincent G. Taylor, O. S. B., D. D., Abbot-Ordinary _ of Belmont Abbey, Belmont, N. C., Father Robert Brennan, O. S. B., Prior of the Benedictine community in Sa vannah, and other members of the clergy were present. The address to the graduates was delivered by Richard Reid. K. S. G., editor of The Catholic News, New York. The valedictory was by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Hobbs, and the salutatory address by Cadet Captain Francis X. Bey- tagh. Musical numbers of the pro gram were by the Benedictine Military School band, under the di rection of William Verhey. Father Bede Lightner, O. S. B., principal of Benedictine Military School, and Major Charles H. Costigan, professor of military science, presented each member of the class of ’52 a Reserve Of ficers Training Corps military certificate signifying that he has successfully completed the course of instruction in the junior di vision ROTC, at a ceremony held on the parade ground. Sheridan Dies in Augusta AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mrs. Kathe- ! rine Keenan Sheridan, w>ife of the j late Richard Brinsley Sheridan, j and mother of Richard Sheridan, West Point Military Academy foot- j ball player, who was killed during j an Army-Yale game in 1931, died | here on June 11, funeral servires j being held from St. Marys’-on-The- j Hlil Church, with Father Arthur j Weltzer officiating. Mrs. Sheridan was born in j Charleston, S. C., the daughter of I the late Denis Keenan and Mrs. j Katherine Woods Keenan. Mrs. Sheridan is survived by a j son, William Jarrell Sheridan, of j North Augusta; a daughter, Mrs. j Joseph L. Herman, of Charleston: twelve granddaughters, thirteen | great-grandchildren, and a num- | ber of nieces and nephews. Pastor in Gainesville FATHER MANNING The Reverend Michael Manning pastor of St. Michael’s' Church, Gainesville, Ga., is a native of Ireland. He was ordained in 1936 after attending All Hallows Col lege and St. Brenda’s Seminary. He came' to the Diocese of Savannah- Atlanta shortly after his ordina tion and served successively as as sistant pastdr of the Blessed Sac rament Church, Savannah; St. Theresa’s Church, Albany; St. Mary on-the-Hill Church, Augusta, and St. Patrick’s Church, Augusta. In 1940, he was appointed pastor of St. Augustine’s Church, Thomasville, and its mis sions in Bainbridge and Moultrie. In the fall of 1945, Father Manning was made pastor of St. Michael’s Church, Gainesville. Last month, Father Manning was chosen as chaplain of the Georgia State Lodge of Elks. Veteran Members of Knights of Coiumbus Honored in S'avannah SAVANNAH, Ga. — Combining three of their special annual meet ings into one, members of Savan nah Council, No. 631, Knights of Columbus, held a social session on May 28 to observe “Old Timers’ Night,” Past Grand Knights’ Night and State Deputy’s Night. Each of these nights would ordi narily have been observed separ ately, but in order to complete the program before Grand Knight Frank A. Winders’ term of office expired, the three were combined in one. Veteran members of council were honored on the “Old Timers” Night” program, while certificate were presented each of the past grand knights hy State Deputy John M. Brennan, who made a brief talk. The response on be half of the past grand knights was made by A. J. Ryan, Jr. Former grand knights who were honored on the occasion were John J. Powers, John J. Bouhan, James P. McMahon, Michael J. Brennan, who concludes this month his second term as state deputy. At the conclusion of the program, supper was served by a commit tee headed by John Ganem. Members of the local parish who were confirmed were Kathleen Langella, Max Hair, Edward Drex- ler and Andrew Evans. Members of St. Ann’s parish, Alapaha, who were confirmed were Edison Griffin, Herman McMil lan, Melvin Moore, David Nugent, Rebecca Ann Harper, Nancy Har per. The sponsors were Muriel Mor ris, James Morris, Donald Harper. O. B. Griffin, Kenneth Nugent, Mrs. John Griffin and Mrs. George Moore. After administering Confirma tion, Bishop Hyland gave Pontifi cal Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The assisting clergy included Father Thomas P. Mc- Grady, O. M. I., pastor of St. Paul’s Church, Douglas, and the mission parishes in Fitzgerald and Alapaha: Father David Welch, of Lowell, Mass.; Father F. X. McCarron, O. M. I., of Lakeland; Father Edward Ward, and Father John Grady, of Douglas; Father Michael Regan, of Savannah. The altar boys were Francis Kratzer, William Kratzer and; Raymond Maddox. Before coming to Fitzgerald, Bishop Hyland visited St. Ann’s Church, Alapaha, and then called on several members of the parish who had their homes damaged by the recent tornado. ST. JOSEPH ACADEMY MOTHERS’ CLUB. M'AYCROSS ELECTS NEW OFFICERS WAYCROS. Two Georgians in Graduating Class at Spring Hill College SPRING HILL, Ala.—Two young men from Savannah, Ga., were among the eighty-three graduates of Spring Hill College who receiv ed academic degrees at commence ment exercises of the 132-year-old Jesuit college held on May 27, with Lionel F. Baxter, of Birmingham, as the principal speaker. One of the Savannah graduates, Edward Killerin, was cadet com mander of the Spring Hill Reserve Officers Training Corps battalion, with the rank of cadet lieutenant colonel. On the day of his gradu ation from the college, he was com missioned a second lieutenant in the Army Transportation Corps Reserve. He majored in economics and was awarded a Bachelor of Science 'degree. Edward Sheffield, the other Sa vannah graduate, received a Bache lor of Arts degree, with a major in history. An outstanding ath lete, be was on the varsity baseball squad for four years. George Siener, of Spartanburg, S. C., another member of the grad uating class, received a Bachelor of Social Science degree, with a major in history. He was a cadet first lieutenant in the ROTC unit and also received a reserve com mission as a second lieutenant on graduation. Louis C. Fink Given New Post With Trust Company of Georgia ATLANTA, Ga. — Louis C. Fink has been appointed odvertifei.ng manager of the Trust Company of Georgia, it has been announced by Marshall B. Hall, president of the trust company. In the newly-created position, Mr. Fink will coordinate the ad vertising and public' relations pro grams of the trust company and the Trust Company of Georgia As sociates, the National Exchange Bank, Augusta; the Fourth Nation al Bank, Columbus; the First Na tional Bank and Trust Company, Macon; the Liberty National Bank and Trust Company, Savannah. Mr. Fink, a native of St. Louis, has made his home in Rutherford, N. J., for the greater part of his life. For twenty-two years he was an employe of the Honover Bank in New York City. During the war years, Mr. Fink was stationed at Oliver General Hospital in Augus ta. He and his wife, the former Mrs. Vera Baxter Watkins, of Augusta, are frequent contributors to Our Sunday Visitor and other Catholic publications. Mr. and Mrs. Fink recently moved to Atlanta after being located in Augusta since last fall. Mr. Fink was connected with the National Exchange Bank dur ing his stay in Augusta.
