ATLANTA, Ga.—Atlanta Coun cil, No. 660, Knight of Columbus, which was granted it charter on May 25, 1902, celebrated its fiftieth anniversay May 24-26, the golden anniversary program including an Anniversary Mass, a major degree ceremonial, an open house party, a reception, a dance and a banquet. The golden anniversary program opened on the afternoon of May 24 with an open house party at the K. of C. Home, to which the pub lic was invited. In the evening there was a reception for members of the council, visiting members, their wives and guests, which was followed by a dance. Members of the council attended in a body a Mass celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Church on May 25 by Father F. M. Perry, S. M., who has long been active in K, of C. circles in Georgia, and who has more than once served as state chaplain. The sermon at the Mass was de Hvered by Monsignor P. J. O’Con nor, Director of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Concep tion at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. In the course of his sermon, Monsignor O’Connor said; “We are gathered here this morning to of fer with the priest the Holy Sacri fice of the Mass in thanksgiving to Almighty God. This occasion marks a notable period in the his tory of Catholicism in Georgia. We are celebrating the 50th anniver sary of the establishment of the Atlanta Council of the Knights of Columbus. “It is a notable occasion because the members of this organization down through the years have stood forth in this community as stalwart defenders of their Faith and as personal examplars of the Catholic religion in a section of the land in which they are representative of a minority group. The Knights of Columbus have exemplified during the decades the cardinal principles of their Order, Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. “Fifty years is a long time in which to render service, but during these years it has been your privi lege as knights to be the strong right arm of Holy Church, .reflect ing her teachings, carrying her spirit of brotherhood to your fel- lowmen, showing forth in word and in deed the charity of Christ and exemplifying your love for God and for Country on many oc casions during these past years, the years of depression, the years of conflict, the years of war and strife, and especially during the uncertain and tragic years in which we now live.” Concluding his sermon, Monsig nor O’Connor said: “America needs men of faith, who believe in God and in Jesus Christ and who reflect that belief in their daily lives. America needs men of prayer, men of integrity, honest men, just men, men who are above reproach in their private lives and in their public service. The Knights of Columbus measure up to all that is demanded of true American citizens and faithful fel- lowers of Jesus Christ. “To the brothers of the Atlanta Council on this anniversary, I say God bless you for what you have done for Church, State and Nation, and may His blessing be always with you as you face the challenge in the years that are to come.” The first, second and third de grees were conferred on a large class of candidates that afternoon, and the convention program closed the next evening with an elaborate banquet at the Elks’ Home.
