vannah, Mr. Gleason has again
been elected vice-president and
treasurer of the Female Orphan
Benevolent Society. Now retired,
Mr. Gleason was for more than
half a century in the cotton busi
ness in Savannah.

St. Mary's Hospital in Athens
Issues Annual Financial Report
ATHENS, Ga. — The financial
statement for St. Mary’s Hospital,
conducted in Athens by the Mis
sionary Sisters of the Most Sacred
Heart of Jesus, which has been is
sued by Dr. T. H. McHatton, chair
man of the board of trustees, re
veals that $32,646.46 was , expend
ed during 1951 for charity hospital
services.,
Covering the period from Janu
ary 1, 1951 to December 31, 1951,
the statement showed that the
average cost per day for in-patient
service is $11.25 and the cost per
visit for out-patient service is
$4.09.
Expenses of the hospital for the
operating period accounted for un
der the statement ranged from
the necessary expenditure of ad
ministration, dietary costs, laun
dry, housekeeping, " utilities : and
■ personnel pharmacy and surgical
supplies. The total operation ex
pense for the hospital last year
mounted to the sum of $309,241.41,
of- which $282,955.74 was for in
patient service 1 and $25,285.67 for
out-patient service.
The amount received for in
patient service was $244,145.55 and
.' the income received from out
patients'was $10,930.70. Total Cash
receipts for the-year 1951 amount
ed to $286,102.60.
Assets of the hospital at the
time of the statement’s release
were $20,081.37, including cash in
bank, accounts receivable and in
ventory. Fixed assets, including
land, buildings; fixtures, equip
ment, etc., bring the total assets to
$309,997.84. ;
Liabilities, including accounts
payable and - loans, amount to
$108,875.70. <
'■■•■• The hospital, running on full
scale operation throughout the
year had 64 patients at the be
ginning of the year and had a total
of 4,515 admissions during the
year. Discharged patients during
the year totaled 4,529, and, there
are 50 patients in the hospital at
present.
It, was disclosed by the, state
ment that there were 3 j387 . adult
patients admitted, and, 38,6 chil
dren. White patients numbered 4,-
032, Colored,' 497, Therewere 574
living births at the hospital dur
ing , the year.
Forty-one of the patients at St.
Mary’s Hospital during 1951 were
Catholics; 4,488 non-Catholics.
St. Mary’s Hospital, located on
Milledge Avenue, has been operat
ed since 1938, and has had tw'O ad
ditions to the original building
since it was acquired by the Sis
ters.
The report shows that the
average number of employees on
the payroll during the year was 86!
with an average of thirteen Sisters
serving each month. The bed ca
pacity (exclusive of bassinets) is
100, and the hospital provided 36,-
700 bed days for patients during
the year. The hospital had 6,419
out-patients during the period.
The report of the board of
trustees is one of progress for the
hospital and for the community.
Members of the board, in addition
to Dr. McHatton, are Abit Nix,
William A. Mathis, Jacob Bern
stein, Frank Postero Antony
Camarata and Robert Watterson.

TO BE HELD IN SPAIN
LONDON. — Father Patrick
Peyton, C. S. C„ the Family Rosary
crusader, has accepted an invita
tion to visit Spain, it was announc
ed here. ,
Bishop Angel Herrera, of Mal
aga, now visiting England, has in
vited him to take the crusade to
his diocese.
Father Peyton’s assistant, Fa
ther John Murphy, will travel to
Spain in December to make ar
rangements.
