James B. Charles
Dies in Florida
TAMPA, Fla.—.Funeral services
for James Burch Charles, registrar
for the Hillsborough County
Health Department, who died
August 1, were held at the Sacred
Heart Church here, Father Francis
J. Kness, S. J., officaiting. Inter
ment services were conducted at
Oak View Cemetery, Albany, Ga.,
by Father Daniel J. Bourke, V. F.
A resident of Tampa for more
than forty years, Mr. Charles was
formerly in the lumber business in
Georgia and Florida. Born in Ala
bama, he was a graduate of the
Alabama Polytechnic Institute at
Auburn. He was a member of the
Holy Name Society, the Knights
of Columbus and the Elks.
Mr. Charles is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Helen P. Charles, of
Tampa; two sons, Ray P. Charles
and James B. Charles, Jr., both of
Tampa; two brothers. Frank R.
Charles and Henry Charles, both
of Miami; two sisters, Mrs. J. B.
Coles, Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs.
A. S. Lawson, Waugh, Ala.
FRANK M. AVINON
DIES IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for Frank M. Avinon, who
died July 28, were held at the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist.
A resident of Savannah since
1918. he was a native of Spain. He
was a mill mechanic for the South
ern Cotton Oil Company, and a
fourth degree member of the
Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Avinon is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Ellen Hope Avinon; four
daughters, Mrs. F. E. Patton, Beau
fort, S. C., Miss Josephine Avinon,
and Mrs. John J. Lacewicz. both of
Camp Lejeune, N. C., and Mrs. E.
S. Altmon, Savannah; two sons, J.
H. Herbert, Savannah, and Frank
J. Avinon, Jacksonville, and six
grandchildren.
MRS. ALVIN HILL
DIES IN AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Funeral
services for Mrs. Catherine Hill,
wife of Alvin Ilill, who died Au
gust 7, were held at the Immacu
late Conception Church, Father
Edward Richardson, S. M. A., of
ficiating.
In addition to her husband, Mrs.
Hill is survived by two brothers,
John Wray and R. L. Wray and
other relatives.
MRS. LOGAN F. ROE
DIES IN SAVANNAH
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Roe,
wife of Logan F. Roe, who died
here on August 4, were held at the
Church of the Nativity of Our Lord,
Thunderbolt, Father John A. Mor
ris offering the Requiem Mass.
Mrs. Roe is survived by her hus
band; a brother, Francis Cronen-
bery, Krozet, Va., and an aunt,
Mrs. Carrie McLaury, Florence,
S. C

ATLANTA, Ga. —The recently
completed school of Our Lady of
the Assumption parish in North
Atlanta will open on September
2, and will be conducted by the Sis
ters of Mercy of the Union.
Sister M. Assumpta, R. S. M.,
will be the Superior of the new
community, and Sister M. Chris
tine, R. S. M., will be the princi
pal, with Sister M. Monica, R.S.M.,
and Sister M. Mercia, R. S. M.,
completing the present teaching
staff.
The school will open with a kin
dergarten and the first, second,
third, fourth and fifth elementary
grades this year. Other grades
will be added until the full eight-
year grammar school course will
be offered.
One hundred and thirty children
have already registered for the kin
dergarten class, and over two hun
dred pupils have been enrolled to
date in the other grades.
Sister Assumpta, the Superior,
was stationed last year at St.
Mary’s Home, in Savannah, as
was Sister Monica. Sister Chris
tine taught last year at the Bless
ed Sacrament School in Savannah;
and Sister Mercia at the Sacred
Heart School, Augusta.
Ths Sisters will occupy a new
convent, just completed. The con
vent will afford accommodations
for ten Sisters when the school will
require a teaching staff of that
number.
The projected parish plant when
completed will include in addition
to the school and convent, a rec
tory and a church. For the pres
ent, the auditorium of the school
building is being used as a church.
The Most Reverend Gerald P.
O’Hara, D. D., J.U.D., Archbishop-
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, an
nounced in April, 1951, the estab
lishment of a new parish which
would serve the rapidly growing
section of Greater Atlanta in the
Ghamblee - Brookhaven area be
yond the parish of the Co-Cathe
dral of Christ the King.
A ten-acre tract of land in Ogle
thorpe Estates was purchased as a
site for the new church and other
parish buildings. The attractively
located property is between Peach
tree Road and Johnson Ferry Road,
and is encircled by Hearst Drive
and Lanier Drive.
Monsignor Joseph E. Moylan, P.
A., at one time rector of the Co-
Cathedral of Christ the King in At
lanta, is the pastor of the Church
of Our Lady of the Assumption,
with Father Charles Mahoney, as
sistant pastor.
Two other new school buildings
are being added to the educational
system of the Diocese of Savan
nah-Atlanta with the opening of
the 1952-53 school year. The new
St. Joseph’s School, Columbus,
which is also conducted by the Sis
ters of Mercy, and the new St.
Theresa’s School, Albany, conduct
ed by the Sisters Adorers of the
Most Precious Blood.
The new Immaculate Conception
School in Atlanta, conducted by
the Sisters of Mercy, has been in
use since after the Christmas va
cation last winter.
Boys From St. Joseph
Home in Washington
Enjoy Treat in Athens
ATHENS, Ga.—Members of the
Holy Name Society of St. Joseph’s
parish entertained other members
of the parish and thirty-five boys
from St. Joseph's Home, Washing
ton, on August 10, at a weiner
roast held on the grounds of St.
Joseph’s school. Father Felix Don
nelly and several of the Sisters of
St. ■ Joseph’s Home accompanied
the boys to Athens for the enjoy
able occasion.
