"McCarthyism—The Fight for America"
Senator Joseph McCarthy (Re
publican) of Wisconsinn, has writ
ten a book which should give every
right-minded and thoughtful Amer
ican something to think about
when confronted with outbursts of
the propaganda campaign in the
press and over the radio against
Senator McCarthy and his efforts
to combat subversive activity with
in the set-up of the national gov
ernment.
Patrick F. Scanlan, K. S. G.,
managing editor of The Tablet, of
ficial organ of the Diocese of
Brooklyn, discussed Senator Mc
Carthy's book in his column.
“From the Managing Editor’s
Desk” in a recent issue of The
Tablet. In recommending a read
ing of “McCarthyism: The Fight
for America,” Mr. Scanlan makes
this comment:
During the last year we have re
ceived queries and have been ask
ed, particularly at meetings in oth
er cities, what about McCarthy’s
charges? What about the attacks
lodged against the Senator?
“McCarthyism” is 104 pages of
factual matter—no “wild charges,”
no “general attacks” — obtained
from books, the secular press and
incontrovertible evidence present
ed at Congressional hearings. The
book is so effective in presenting
and proving its case thatf it has not
been reviewed in any of the large
metropolitan dailies, most of which
gave their readers all the baseless
aspersions cast upon the Senator
and suppress his side of the story
—that is, the facts. Moreover, it
has a magnificent index.
It will be interesting to observe
if the book is procurable in the
New York Public Library, which
so often brags of its opposition to
censorship, or in any such book
stores as Brentano’s, and if the
newsstand dealers feature it or
keep it under the counter. We have
been informed all Union News
stands have it.
“McCarthyism” is even a reve
lation to those who have followed
the Senator with a friendly spirit
because they knew the betrayers
he has attacked and those who
have endeavored to shield the en
emy by smearing the Senator. The
revelation is this: the Senator, as
he has become aware of the Red
infiltrators, spies, and fellow-trav-

ellers, has adopted a better style,
has become more familiar with his
subject and more adept at present
ing a convincing case against those
who, through foreign and domestic
policy, have sold out America.
“McCarthyism” strikingly shows a
change in tactics. The author has
graduated from an amateur to a
professional prosecutor.
The chapter entitled “The Evi
dence on Owen Lattimore” is a
devastating piece and is particu
larly effective because it quotes
the record over and over again:
The public will recall that when
the Senator first assailed Latti
more he said he was willing to risk
his whole ease against the Reds
on this man. Read this chapter
and be convinced.
On another page—73—is a very
effective demonstration of the fal
sity of the assaults on the Senator.
Photostats of articles are taken
from the New York “Times” and
the “Herald-Tribune” of June 22,
1950, with the following headlines:
“McCarthy Is Held Refuted on
Files.” (Times): “Tydings Asserts
F. B. X. Cleared State Department
Files,” (Herald-Tribune”). The
news article asserts Tydings “says
F. B. I. reports dossiers not tam
pered with as charged by McCar
thy.” The Senator on the same
page carried a photostate of a let
ter to him from J. Edgar Hoover,
F. B. I. head , dated July 10, in
which he says:
“My dear Senator:
“I have received your letter dat
ed July 27, 1950, inquiring wheth
er this Bureau has examined the
81 loyalty files which the members
of the Tydings’ Committee have
been scrutinizing and whether
such an examination by the F.B.I.
has disclosed that the files are
complete and that nothing has been
removed therefrom.
“The Federal Bureau of Investi
gation has made no such examina
tion and therefore is not in a posi
tion to make any statement con
cerning the completeness or in
completeness of the State Depart
ment files.
To all those who have written
or asked questions on the Senator
and his charges we recommend:
“McCarthyism. The Fight for
America.” (Devin-Adair Co., 23 E.

cents.) We hope it will particularly
receive a wide distribution in Wis
consin, for it will serve as a cam
paign argument for the Senator

Writing in The Mineral Wells
Index, Mineral Wells, Texas, V. K.

subject in his column, ‘ How’re Ye

“The Roman Catholic Church
probably knows more about the
management of people of various
races and predilections than we
will ever know; they have studied
the science of government for cen
