Father Donnelly Is
Speaker at P-TA,
Meeting in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—At the meeting
of the Parent-Teacher Association
of the Sacred Heart School, which
was held during Catholic Bible
Week, the guest speaker, Father
Felix Donnelly, chose the Sacred
Scriptures as the subject for his
talk.
He outlined the history of the
various translations of the Bible
which had been made from the
Latin Vulgate version produced in
the fourth century by St. Jerome
to the printed edition by Guten
berg in 1452. He told how the
Church has preserved and pro
tected the Bible through the cen
turies and how monks had de
voted 4*eir lives to the laborious
task of copying Biblican manu
scripts.
Father Donnelly sketched the
relationship between the Old and.
New Testaments, and stressed how
the Bible was used by the Church
in the liturgy of the Mass, in pray
ers, in office of priests and in re
ligious courses in schools. He
concluded by urging daily reading
of the Bible.
Father Richard Gaul, S. J,
spiritual director of the school, in
vited the members to visit the
Bible Week display at the Sacred
Heart Church.
Mrs. Jack Mulcay, president,'
who conducted the business meet
ing, invited the parents to give
attention to the display of Bible
Week posters that had been pre
pared by pupils of the seventh and
eighth grades.
Mrs. Ernest Dinkins announced
that the annual turkey supper,
sponsored by the association,
would he held on October 22, and
that a waste paper collection drive
was being conducted. Following
the business session, refreshments
were served by Mrs. August Hoehn
and Mrs. Bernard Cashin, the
hostesses. ,
Article in The Sign
Presents Facts About
Conditions in Colombia
Facts are available to prove that
no one is being persecuted by the
Catholic Church in Colombia, de
spite reports spread in the U. S.
press, declares an article in the
September issue of The Sign, na
tional Catholic magazine published
at Union City, N. J.
Citing and correcting several
“untrue” news and magazine
stories, the article, “Whipping Boy
for Bigots,” written by Father Al
bert J. Nevins of the Maryknoll
Mission N. Y., asserts, “It is about
time that the secular press of the
United States got some facts
straight about our South American
neighbor, Colombia.”
“Ever since the Liberal party
went out of power in 1946, there
has been a growing crescendo of
cries that the Catholic Church and
the Colombian government have
become partners in a terroristic
persecution of Protestant sects.
During the past two years, large
segments of the American press
have increasingly allowed their
column to be used for the further
ance of this libel. In the interest
of truth and justice, the time has
come for American journalists to
investigate the smear charges,
which are manufactured in fac
tional mission offices in the United
States, and then handed out as
authenic releases originating from
“feudalistic - Colombia. . . ”
Here is one of many cases Father
Nevins details: “Recently, the
United Press carried a story under
a Bogota dateline which declared
that the Rev. Fred Riddell, mem
ber of the Board of Foreign Mis
sions of the Southern Baptist Con
vention of Richmond, Va., had
charged that Father Flbrencia
Alvarez had led a mob of 100
people in stoning a new Baptist
Church during its dedication cere
monies. According to Mr. Riddell,
the attack continued for an hour
and a half. Father Alvarez was
said to have urged the crowd on. . .
“That is the way the United
Press released the story without
any investigation, checking or ex
planation. However, the actual
facts, following an investigation by
Latinoamerica (published in Mexico
City) were these. Catholics of the
Perserveraneia district of Bogota
were offended when they received
personal invitations to attend the
dedication ceremonies of the new
Baptist Church. Hotheads in the
area gathered a crowd, leading it
on the Baptist thurch. The pastor
of Perseverancia, acting on the
orders of the Archbishop of
Bogota, went to the scene, deterred
the crowd from action, and per
suade I the people to return to
their horn :s ’
