NEWS FROM ST.
MARY'S, ROME
ROME, Ga.—Following the clos
ing of school on June 5, the teach
ing staff of St. Mary’s School de
parted for summer studies at vari
ous colleges.
Sister Thomas Margaret will at
tend Catholic University in Wash
ington; Sister Paul Catherine will
attend Gainesville University in
Gainesville, Fla.; Sister Mary Faith
will go to Notre Dame University
in South Bend, Indiana; and Sis
ter Annette will attend the Uni
versity of Michigan.
St. Mary’s Parish Council met at
the school on Tuesday, May 19.
Mrs. W. R. Kelly presided at the
meeting, when the members made
bed pads for Our Lady of Perpet
ual Help Cancer Home in Atlanta.
Hostesses for the social period
were Mrs. J. F. Corbitt, Miss
Frances Corbitt and Mrs. A. F.
Belzer, A new member welcomed
at this time was Mrs. A. F. Sehlot-
terer, formerly of Albany, New
York.
St. Mary’s Altar Society met on
Monday, June 1, at the school,
with Mrs. E. W. Stein presiding.
Miss Janie Fahy led the opening
prayer. Following routine reports,
a complete report on the recent
benefit turkey supper and cake
sale was discussed. Mrs. D. E.
Damon, formerly of Indiana, was
welcomed as a new member. Hos
tesses for the social period were
Mrs. C. W. Brooks and Miss Janie
Fahy.
The Catholic Laymen’s Associa
tion, Rome Branch, met on Thurs
day, June 4, at St. Mary’s School,
following monthly Holy Hour Serv
ices. Short papers were given by
Leo Fahy and Mrs. W, L.. Argus
on the subject of Baptism. Father
Patrick Connell joined the group
for the open discussion which fol
lowed.
Graduates of St. Mary’s School
were honored guests at a breakfast
on Sunday, May 21, at which
Father Patrick Connell was host.
The nine children attended
Mass and received Holy Com
munion in a body preceding the
breakfast, which was held in the
rectory.
Children of the seventh and
eighth grades of St. Mary’s School
enjoyed a picnic and swimming
party at Cave Spring, Ga., on Mon
day, June 1, when the Seventh
graders honored the members of
the graduating class.
Accompanying the children on
the all-day outing were Sister
Thomas Margaret, G. P., Principal
Father Patrick Connell, Pastor,
and several grade mothers.
Altar Boys, members of the
children’s Choir and graduates of
St. Mary’s School were entertain
ed at an all-day outing at the
Chattanooga Amusement Park on
Wednesday, June 3. Traveling in
a chartered bus, the children
were accompanied by Father Pat
rick Connell, Host for the oc
casion; Sister Thomas Margaret,
Sister Paul Catherine, Sister Mary
Faith and Sister Annette—all
Dominican Sisters of the school.
Part of the funds for this enjoy
able event were raised earlier at
a benefit bridge party, for which
co-chairmen were Mrs. Robert
Evans and Mrs. Halvin Dial.
Play Day for all the children
of St. Mary’s school was held on
Thursday, June 4. Suitable enter
tainment for the various age
groups was supervised by the
Sisters and grade Mothers. The
Exercises Held
At Boys' Catholic
High in Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Graduation ex
ercises of Boys’ Catholic High
School were held at Bell auditori
um on May 31st.
Presiding at the exercises was
the Most Reverend Francis E. Hy
land, D.D., J.C.D., auxiliary of Sa
vannah-Atlanta.
The program opened with an in
vocation by the Rev. Arthur A.
Weltzer, pastor of St. Patrick’s
church. The valedictory was de
livered by Joseph K. Pinnell, with
the salutatory address given by
Eugene Cashin.
The Very Rev. John J. Kennedy,
pastor of St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill
church delivered the address to
the graduates. Diplomas were
awarded by Brother John Arthur,
principal of the school.

St. Angela's Holds
Graduation Exercises
AIKEN, S. C.—Graduation ex
ercises for St. Angela’s Academy
were held at St. Mary’s Help of
Christians Church on the evening
of May 28.
The Commencement address was
delivered by His Excellency the
Most Reverend John G. Russell,
S. T. D., Bishop of Charleston.

on the grounds of the school. This
event is sponsored annually by St.
Mary’s School Auxiliary, Mrs. J.
E. Sweeten was general chairman.
Father Patrick Connell, Pastor
of St. Mary’s Church, celebrated
the fourteenth anniversary of his
ordination to the Priesthood on
Wednesday, June 3.
On that day parishioners of St.
Mary’s Parish attended a special
High Mass and offered their pray
ers and Communions for his spe
cial intentions. The children's
choir of St. Mary’s School sang
the Mass and Benediction.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Graduation
exercises for the Blessed Sacra
ment School were held at the 8
o’clock mass on June 5th. The ser

Graduation Exercises
At Valdosta School
VALDOSTA, Ga.—The gradua
tion exercises for the Eighth Grade
of Saint John the Evangelist School,
Valdosta, were held at St. John’s
Church. The members of the class
and the Seventh Grade pupils at
tended Mass at eight-thirty. At the
close of Mass, diplomas were award
ed by Father John J. O’Shea to the
following pupils: Brian Killeen,
Michael Lahood, Laurice Kalil and
Sara Marie Moses. Benediction of
the Most Blessed Sacrament closed
the exercises.
At noon a delicious luncheon was
served by the mothers of the sev
enth grade pupils. Tommy Thomas
welcomed the graduates in/ the
name of the seventh grade. Each
graduate responded with a little
talk. Father O’Shea spoke on the
value of a Catholic education and
the necessity of carrying on the
principles and lessons inculcated
while at St. John’s. Those present

At Augusta
AUGUSTA, Ga.—The annual
piano and voice recitals were
given recently at Mount St. Jo
seph’s Academy.
