Pilgrimage Marks 800th Anniversary of
Establishment of Norwegian Hierarchy
OSLO, Norway, (NC)—Catholic
celebrations marking the 800th an
niversary of the establishment of
the Hierarchy in Norway were
marked by a Pontifical High Mass
at Trondheim and a pilgrimage to
Stiklestad, where St. Olaf, Patron
of Norway, died in 1030.
These events took place on July
26 and 27, immediately prior to
other two-day celebrations planned
by the State Lutheran church in
the capital city of Sor-Trondelag
province, which was formerly
known as Nidaros.
Because Catholics in Norway, a
Catholic stronghold in pre-Refor-
mation times, now number only
som 5,000 out of a total population
of 3.309,000. their celebrations
were on a minor scale compared
with those planned by the Luth
eran church, to which the vast
majority of Norwegians belong.
However ,the Catholic celebra
tions were marked by the presence
of His Eminence Bernard Cardinal
Griffin, Archbishop of Westmins
ter, England, and by two Norweg
ian Bishops—Bishop James Man
gers, 8.M., Vicar Apostolic of Olso,
and Bishop John Rueth, Vicar
Apostolic of Central Norway.
Cardinal Griffin joined in com
memorating another Englishman,
Nicholas Cardinal Breakspeare,
who came to Trondheim in 1153 on
a papal mission and erected the
See of Trondheim. A year later,
Cardinal Breakspeare was elected
Pope—the first and only one of his
nation ever to hold the supreme
office—and took the name of Ad
rian IV. Known as the Apostle of
the North, Pope Adrian died at
Anagni, Italy, in 1159.
The Lutheran celebrations, to
which invitations were extended
to Lutheran Bishops throughout
Scandinavia and also to leaders of
the Church of England (Anglican)
and the Church of Scotland (Pres
byterian), featured a series of reli
gious services and concerts in
Nidaros Cathedral, now the official
church of American-born Lutheran
Bishop Arne Fjellbu of Nidaros.
One of the most splendid Gothic
buildings in Scandinavia, Nidaros
Cathedral, once Catholic, is the
place where Norwegian kings are
crowned.
Nidaros Cathedral contains the
tomb of St. Olaf, King of Norway,
who helped to complete the Christ
ianizing of the country, and who
was slain in battle at Stiklestad
while putting down a revolt. The
Cathode pilgrimage was to the
shrine near the place where the
king-saint, regarded as the cham
pion of national independence
died. It took place in anticipation
of his Feast Day on July 29.
Reflecting the fewness of Nor
wegian Catholics is the fact that
the Cathedral Church of Bishop
Mangers in Oslo is the smallest in
all Europe, seating only 200 per
sons. In Bishop Rueth’s Vicariate
there are only 240 Catholics out
of a population of 481,000. Of the
40 priests serving the Church in
Norway, only eleven are Norweg
ian, eight of them being converts.
One of the converts is Father
Thoralf Norheim, who was ordain
ed as a Dominican in 1950, the first
Norwegian to become a Dominican
since the Reformation. In the same
year, Father Anton Taxt became
the first Norwegian to be ordained
as a diocesan priest in 50 years.
Close to the eve of the Trond
heim celebrations came the an
nouncement that the Norwegian
parliament had shelved a constitu
tional amendment to permit the
Society of Jesus to function in Nor
way. This meant defeat of a pro
posal submitted by the Cabinet
and backed by Norwegian newspa
pers as well as by a number of
prominent Lutheran churchmen, to
repeal a ban against the Jesuits
incorporated in the Constitution of
May 31, 1814.
As originally adopted, Article 2
of the Constitution read: “The
Evangelical Lutheran religion shall
be maintained and constitute the
established Church of the King- j
dom. The inhabitants who profess ;
the said religion shall be found to ;
educate their children in the
same. The Jesuit and other monk
ish orders shall not be tolerated.
Jews furthermore are excluded
from the country.”
The ban against Jews was lifted
in 1851. In 1897, the first effort was
made to abrogate the ban against
the Jesuits and ‘‘other monkish
orders.” This movement resulted
in having the clause against “other
Monkish orders” being stricken
out, but not that against the
Jesuits.
According to parliamentary sec
retary general Gunnar Hoff, other
pressing legislation will prevent
the constitutional amendment in
favor of the Jesuits coming up
again before January, 1955.
Miss Margaret Duggan
Funeral at Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. — After a long
illness, with many years of suffer
ing, Margaret E. Duggan passed to
her eternal reward on June 22nd,
1953.
A native Savannahian, she was
the daughter of the late Jeremiah
and Margaret Keller Duggan. For
many years she was Sacristan at
St. Patrick’s Church, which was de
molished by a storm in 1940.
She was one of the pioneer Sun
day School teachers at Thunder
bolt, Ga., in an endeavor to keep
the faith through the children,
looking to the erection of a parish
church at that location, which
hope has now been realized in the
Church of the Nativity.
Another of her interests was the
work of the Catholic Laymen’s As
sociation. She attended a number
of their annual Conventions in the
different cities of the State.
Funeral services were held at'
the Cathedral of St. John the Bap- j
tist with Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. J. Mc
Namara officiating. Present in the j
Sanctuary were Father Norbert of
