NEW YORK.—More than 20
million people subscribe to Cath
olic newspapers and magazines
published in the Untied States,
the Catholic Press Directory re
ports.
A total U. S. circulation of 20,-
701,412 puts Catholic Press circu
lation at the highest ever record
ed, according to the Directory
published here this week by the
Catholic Press Association.
The annual CPA survey covers
557 U. S Catholic publications and
showed an increase of 16 publica
tions and 1.2 million subscribers
for the past year.
The 34 Canadian publications
listed in the Directory show a
circulation of 1,191,894, bringing
the total of Catholic publications
in North America to 591, and the
circulation to 21,893,306.
In the United States, 131 Cath
olic newspapers circulate to four
million subscribers; 426 maga
zines to 16.7 million subscribers.
The North American Catholic
press serves an estimated reader-
ship of 37.7 million Catholics—
31.6 million in the United States
and 6.1 million in Canada, the Di
rectory says.
Listing newspaper circulation
data, the Directory reports:
The New World, official weekly
newspaper of the Archdiocese of
Chicago, carries the highest paid
circulation for a local Catholic pa
per with 144,518 paid subscribers.
Other circulation leaders among
Weekly newspapers are listed as
the Catholic Herald Citizen, Mil
waukee, 115,890; The Tablet,
Brooklyn, N. Y., 110,080; The Mich
igan Catholic, Detroit, 108,250;
The Advocate, Newark, N. J., 99,-
281; The St. Louis Register, St.
Louis, Mo., 98,593; The Monitor,
Trenton, N. J„ 93,500; The Cath
olic Universe Bulletin, Cleveland,
O., 93,335; and The Pilot, Boston,
85.613.
The Register of Denver, Colo.,
serves 794,566 subscribers each
week through its national edition
and 32 diocesan editions, the Di
rectory reports. Our Sunday Visi
tor, Huntington, Ind., reaches 787,-
494 subscribers with its national
edition and ten diocesan editions,
figures show.
In the magazine field, Columbia,
official organ of the Knights of
Columbus, leads the paid circula
tion magazines with 783,834 sub
scribers, the Directory says.
Other paid circulation magazine
leaders are listed as The Catholic
Digest with 713,500 paid subscrib
ers; The Young Catholic Messen
ger with 560,752; and Extension,
organ of the Catholic Church Ex
tension Society, with 503,300.
Mission the official organ of the
Society for the Propagation of the
Faith, heads the list of non-paid
circulation magazines with 1,125,-
000 circulation. Novena Notes,
published weekly by the Servite
Fathers, follows close with 1,115,-
061.
In a forward to the Directory,
Charles J. McNeill, president of
the Catholic Press Association,
states that the constant and con
tinuous rate of growth of the Cath
olic press over the years is the
strongest indication that the
growth will continue in the years
ahead.
The first edition of the Catholic
Press Directory, published in 1923,
listed 251 publications and a total
of 6.4 million. In the ensuing 30
years, Mr. McNeill points out, the
Catholic press has added 340 pub-
lications and 15.4 million subscrib
ers.

Out at Thomasville
THOMASVILLE, Ga.—At the
last meeting of the Thomasville
Branch of the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia,' a new
group of officers were elected.
They are; Mr. John Larkin, Presi
dent, Miss Ethel Gonzalez, Vice-
president, Mrs. J. Rigsby, treasur
er, and Mr. Francis A. Snyder, sec
retary.
The Chapter “Indulgences —
What Are They?” of Father
O’Briens “The Faith of Millions”,
was the subject of the discussion
group, and some very informative
points were raised and answered
during the evening.
President John Larkin also re
ported, that in the several months
during which the group have been
sponsoring the placement of K. of
C. booklets on the faith, in the
local railroad and bus stations, that
more than 1,000 of these informa
tive pamphlets have been distribut
ed from the racks. It is the inten
tion of the Group to continue the
distribution in this manner.
The Thomasville Branch is also
co-operating with other parish or-
ganiaztions, the N.C.C.W., and The
Altar Society, in the accumulation
of books for a Parish Library.
This library which should be ready
in September will contain books
on Apologetics. The History of the
Church, The Sacraments, Articles
of Faith and other related Sub
jects,
There will be no further meet
ings of the Association until the
Second Monday in September.

July 30 in the school hall of the
parish of the Nativity of our Lord.

ON RED PRINTING
WASHINGTON. (NC)—A bill re
quiring communist or communist-
front organizations to register with
the U. S. government a list of all
printing equipment has been pass
ed unanimously by the House of
Representatives and sent to the
Senate.
Information on Red printing fa
cilities is vital in checking the un
derground operations of the Com
munist Party, the House Commit
tee on Un-American Activities re
ported. It said the spread of print
ed and mimeographed literature is
a vital part of the communist un
derground operations.
