Is “Duty
LISBON, (NC)—The apostolate
of the laity “is not a devotional
luxury nor yet another occupa
tion, but the plain duty which we
all have according to our capaci
ties.”
This point was made by Sir
Hugh Taylor, president of the
graduate division of Pax Romana
and Princeton University profes
sor, in an. address to the eighth
general meeting of Pax Romana
held here.
Sir Hugh, who is a Knight
Commander of the Order of the
British Empire as well as of the
Order of St. Gregory the Great,
emphasized that the apostolate of
the laity should be the constant
preoccupation of all Catholic in
tellectuals, He spoke at the in
augural session, which was pre
sided over by Archbishop Fer
nando Cento, Papal Nuncio to
Portugal.
Every profession can be the
meads of a personal apostolate,
Sir Hugh said. In juxtaposition to
this consideration he placed the
modern “heresy of efficiency.”
This heresy, he said, is blind to
the necessity of moral values in
the lives of men, and it ignoi'es
the .fact that contemplation is an
essential element to the integra-
ion of the professions with the
primary vocation of the aposto
late.
The general meeting of Pax
Romana opened with a Mass cele
brated by Manuel Cardinal Gon-
calves Cerejeira, Patriarch of
Lisbon, and was attended by
Archbishop Manuel Trindade
Salgueiro, Auxiliary of Lisbon.
From Lisbon the sessions moved
to Fatima, where the lay aposto
late of those engaged in the lib
eral arts profession was consider
ed.
Pax Romana is not what is
technically known as a “peace,
organization.” Rather it is an in
ternational community of univer
sity Catholic men and women
with a program of complete
Christian formation rather than
of any specialized work. Its an
nual international congress is its
principal instrument for concert
ed action. The present meetings
in Lisbon are being held for
Catholic graduate students and
professionals.
Stresses Obligation
Of Parents Regarding
Catholic Education
LANSING, Mich., (NC)—“The
full effect of divorcing religion
from education in our tax-sup-
ported schools is being recogniz
ed more every day,” Bishop Jos
eph H. Alberfe of Lansing said in
a pastoral letter to his people
which emphasized the import
ance of a Catholic education and
reminded parents that all Cath
olics are bound to send their
children to a Catholic school.
“More secular educators, who
are genuinely honest and sincere
are admitting the wisdom of the
Catholic Church in maintaining
its own system of schools,” the
letter said.
“The knowledge of the things
of God and of His moral law are
the real foundation of true edu
cation,” the Bishop continued.
“Without this foundation secular
knowledge alone can become the
undoing of individuals and ulti
mately of nations as we see in
communist-dominated countries
today where tyranny rules a
subjugated and oppressed popu
lace.”
Only for “very serious reasons,”
wrote Bishop Albers, “can the
authorities of the Church permit
children to attend non-Catholie
schools,”
After listing the circumstances
under which pastors could give
parents permission to send their
children to non-Catholic schools,
the Bishop said:
“Permission to send children to
public, schools can be granted
only to parents who sincerely
promise to send their children
regularly to catechism classes
provided by the pastors for ele
mentary and high school children.
Parents who receive this permis
sion have a great responsibility
for the religious training of their
children.” He added that parents
should make every effort to
give their sons and daughters a
Catholic college or a Catholic
university education.
St. Patrick’s Altar Society, Lake
Providence, La., has established
a memorial fund to provide Mass
es for the repose of the soul of
former U. S. Senator Joseph E,
Ransdell of Louisiana, who died
recently at the age of 95. He was
a member of St. Patrick’s parish.
