SENATE, HOUSE
VOTE TO OUTLAW
COMMUNIST PARTY
WASHINGTON, (NC) — The
Senate voted 85 to 0 to outlaw tlie
Communist Party in the United
States.
Though many bills to outlaw
the Communist Party had been
introduced, this was the first that
got to he floor for a voe.
The bill was passed in com
bination form with the Butler
bill, which is aimed at ending
communist domination of certain
labor unions. The Butler bill
would deprive communist-infil
trated labor unions of the right
of collective bargaining for wa
ges and working conditions under
the National Labor Relations Act,
The bill outlawing the Com
munist Party would make mem
bership in the party or willing
cooperation with communist ob
jectives or world conspiracy sub
ject to fine or imprisonment, or
both. Both Attorney General Her
bert Brownell and FBI Director
J. Edgar Hoover have opposed
such a bill on the grounds that it
would drive the Reds deeper un
derground and make it more dif
ficult to keep them under control.
It was predicted here that if the
combination bill reached the
floor of the House before ad
journment, that it, or a similar
bill approved by a House com
mittee, would be passed.
On August 16 the House passed
a similar bill by a vote of 305 to
2. No votes were cast by Reps.
Burdick (R-ND) and Multer
(D-NY). The Bill is not final as
Senate and House versions must
be reconciled in conference.

Canadian Congress
Opens With Mass
CAP DE LA MADELEINE,
Que., (NC)—A miraculous statue
was carried from Three Rivers to
the riverside Shrine of Our Lady
of the Rosary here through a path
lined by thousands of devout pil
grims as Canadian faithful ob
served the first day of their Na
tional Marian Congress.
A midnight Mass in the Ca
thedral at Three Rivers, See city
adjoining this shrine, officially
opened the Congress.
Bishop George Leon Pelletier
of Three Rivers, President of the
Episcopal Committee for the
Marian Year and president of
National Marian Congress, offi
ciated.
The cathedral was filled to
overflowing for the midnight
Mass as it had been five hours
earlier for the Marian Hour,
preached by Bishop Pelletier,
which marked the appearance at
the cathedral of the miraculous
statue of Our Lady of the Holy
Rosary from Cap De La Made
leine shrine. This statue has just
completed a visit to 17 dioceses in
eastern Canada.
Nine hours after the midnight
Mass the miraculous statue was
escorted in solemn procession
from the cathedral to the Cap De
La Madeleine Shrine, the escort
headed by Bishop Pelletier, May
or LeBlanc of Three Rivers and
other leading citizens. Along the
route thousands of devout pil
grims joined in prayer.
With the arrival of the miracu
lous statue the first day of the
ten-day Marian Congress opened
at the shrine, His Eminence Paul
Emile Cardinal Leger, Archbish
op of Quebec, officiating at Pon
tifical Mass. This first day, was
“Quebec Day” at the congress.
Each of the 10 Canadian prov
inces had a day in its honor.
Thousands from all parts of Que
bec Province and many thousands
from other parts of Canada and
the United States attended the
first day ceremonies.
The opening ceremonies in
cluded a demonstration of love
for the Mother of God by some
7,000 children at Three Rivers
Stadium. Cardinal Leger presided
at this ceremony, and at seven P.
M. also presided at public recita
tion of the Rosary which is
broadcast each day by him, fol
lowed by a vast radio audience.
The first public presentation of
the special Marian pageant, “Our
Lady Spreads Her Mantle from
Sea to Sea” took place in the
evening at the Three Rivers Coli
seum and drew thousands of
spectators. This pageant is the
work of Sister Paul Emile and
depicts the homage of all prov
inces and peoples of Canada to
the Blessed Virgin.
The evening concluded with a
great torchlight procession at the
Cap De La Madeleine shrine.
