VISITATION MONASTERY—The beautiful Candler home pictured here has been converted
into a Monastery to house the 10 Visitation Nuns who recently arrived in Atlanta. The Visitation
Nuns, founded in France in 1610, wear a habit similar to the Trappist Monks, and live a life of prayer
and meditation, doing all their own necessary manual labor.—(Van Bruen Colley Photo).
Superintendent Urges Civics
Clubs For Diocesan Schools
ATLANTA, Ga.—Activation of
a Catholic Civics Club in every
school of the diocese was en
couraged this week by the Rever
end Cornelius L. Maloney, dio
cesan Superintendent. This rec
ommendation was made in a let
ter sent to the principals by the
diocesan Superintendent.
In his letter to the schools, Fa
ther Maloney, described the Cath
olic Civics Clubs as “an effective
force in promoting an under
standing of Christian social prin
ciples through planning, study,
and practical projects.”
The Catholic Civics Clubs,
sponsored by the Commission on
American Citizenship of The
Catholic University of America,
are designed to “foster and pro
mote civic virtue and to be a
positive aid to teachers in train
ing their pupils to become alert
and articulate Christian citizens.”
Clubs are usually organized
among boys and girls in the up
per elementary grades.
Over 10,000 official charters
have been issued by the Commis
sion since 1946. Clubs .have been
organized in all forty-eight states
and in Alaska, Canada, Puerto
Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
As a means to -the attainment
of its over-all objective, the Com
mission yearly establishes a
theme for a specific program of
study and action.
Last year’s theme was “We’re
All People.” Unusual activities
and projects were reported to the
Commission in the development
of this theme which showed how
various people have contributed
to the growth of this country.
This theme will be the subject of
a new series of picture-stories in
Treasure Chest, the nationally dis
tributed Catholic comic-style
magazine, issued biweekly during
the school year.
The 1954-55 theme was des
cribed in Father Maloney’s letter
under the title “We Need One
Another.” The\announcement in
the letter indicated that the pro
jects and study acivities of he
Civics Clubs in 1954-55 will pro
mote an understanding of the
material interdependence of men,
with special reference to the close
relationship that exists between
urban and rural people. Through
a unified approach, the theme
will demonstrate man’s depend
ence upon God . . . the social na
ture of man . . . the dignity of the
worker and his work . . . and the
unity of all men.
The program will be imple
mented through a series of ar
ticles to appear in the Young
Catholic Messenger, national
Catholic current affairs weekly
for students of the upper elemen
tary grades, published by Geo. A.
Pflaum, Publisher, Inc., Dayton,
Ohio.
A Study Guide, mailed month
ly to teachers will supplement
the articles with practical sug
gestions for activities, projects,
and additional study.
The 1954-55 theme of the
Catholic Civics Clubs, Father Ma
loney emphasized, “will be a
practical means for the training
of boys and girls to become good
citizens for God and country.”
