79 Teenagers Say
Goodbye After
Year In U. S.
WASHINGTON, (NC)—Seven
ty-nine teenagers from Germany
and Austria, having concluded a
.year’s stay in America, are now
on their way home.
“I’m full of mixed emotions,”
said a flaxen-haired girl from
Aachen. “I feel like crying, hav
ing to leave my host parents and
all my dear friends in America.
And at the same time, I’m so ex
cited counting the days until I
shall meet my father and mother
again and my six brothers and
sisters, to tell them all about this
wonderful country.”
The boys and girls had return
ed to Washington from all parts
of the United States to thank
their sponsor, the National Cath
olic Welfare Conference, and the
U. S. Department of State, which
had made it possible for them to
spend a year in. America.
At a farewell luncheon, these
bright-eyed youngsters them
selves furnished the most elo
quent testimony to the value and
success of the teenage exchange
program that goes under the
name of “Operation Hospitality.”
They had elected spokesmen
to express their gratitude. “If all
parents in America are like our
host parents, then we must, in
deed congratulate this country,”
said a girl from Austria. “We are
leaving America and returning
home better citizens of Germany,
better citizens of the world and
better Catholics,” assured a tall
lad from Bavaria.
And they showed through deeds
that they realized how lucky they
were in being chosen to spend a
year in America. Remembering
that back in their homelands,
there are thousands of young
refugees from tyranny, many of
them lacking the bare necessi
ties of life, the 79 teenagers took
up a collection and raised over
$100 which they presented to
Msgr. Paul Tanner, assistant gen
eral secretary of N. C. W. C. This
money is to be used to help the
less fortunate young refugees in
Europe.
Monsignor Tanner, in speaking
to the youngsters voiced the ear
nest hope that beneath the ex
citement furnished by a year’s
stay in America there would be
left an imprint on their charac
ters enabling them to become the
molders of a brighter and better
future for their own countries
and the world.
Msgr. William E, McManus, as
sistant director of the Education
Department, N. C. W. C., who
has directed Operation Hospital
ity since its inauguration, had a
