DECATUR, GEORGIA
WALSINGHAM, England, (Ra- j
dio. NC)—Made from wedding,
rings and other treasure^ contrib- j
uted by Catholics in the UnitecH
States as well as in Britain and
| many parts of the British Com-
j monwealth, a solid gold crown
was placed here on a new pil
grimage statue of the Virgin in
England’s national Marian shrine.
Highlight of Assumption Day
celebrations in England, the
crowning of the statue was per
formed by Archbishop Gerald P.
O'Hara, Bishop of Savannah-At-
Janta, Britain’s new Apostolic
Delegate. It was his first public
act as papal representative.
After the crowning ceremony
20 American airmen, from Scun
thorpe camp, led by their chap
lain Father Robert Adams of
Boston, escorted the statue in
procession to its permanent home
in the Slipper Chapel on the out
skirts of Walsingham. Many in
the procession walked the mile
barefooted.
The presence of the American
servicemen recalled that it was
an American priest, Msgr. David
j C. Sullivan, director of Catholic
Charities for the Worcester dio
cese, who made history nine years
ago as a lieutenant colonel in the
U. S. 8th Air Force in England
