Membership Of Religious Orders
AS PAPAL CLOISTER TOOK EFFECT
Of Men Shows 14 Percent Increase
WASHINGTON,— Membership
of religious' communities of men
which have houses in more than
one diocese has risen 14 per cent
since the end of' World War II
to a worldwide total of more than
270.000, a study made here re
veals.
Of the 270,000 members some
113.000 are priests. More than
18.000 of these are active in the
United States,.which has a larger
number of religious priests than
any other country. -Italy, with
close to 15,000, has the next larg
est number, followed by Spain,
France and Germany.
These figures do not include
diocesan priests, who total some
28.600 in the United States. The
world total of diocesan priests is
256.152.

study compiled the latest statis
tics available from a variety of
sources.
The following tables give the
number of religious priests by
continents and for countries
where more than 2,000 of them
are now serving:
