The buildings were dedicated Sunday, November 28th, by His Excellency Archbishop O'Hara. LETTER ADDRESSED TO BISHOP HYLAND EXPRESSES HOLY FATHER'S "THANKS" CLOSE OF MARIAN YEAR MARKED BY EVENING MASS OFFERED BY ARCHBISHOP SAVANNAH, Ga. — His Holi ness has sent his thanks to the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta for their generosity in the Peter’s Pence Collection for 1954. The letter from A. Dell’Aqua, Substitute Secretary and address ed to Bishop Hyland reads as follows. “The Holy Father has duly re ceived, through the good offices of the Apostolic Delegation, the offering of $6,000.00, presented by Your Excellency as Peter’s Pence for the year 1954 from the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta.” “His Holiness derives much consolation from this enthusias tic cooperation in the adminis trative, apostolic, ad charitable activities of the Holy See, and es pecially from the expression of true filial attachment to the Vicar of Christ which it implies. He wishes me to assure Your Ex cellency of His heartfelt grati tude and sincere appreciation, and he prays that God may abun- d,;.ntlv reward all those who have participated in this touching ges ture of loyal affection.” “In pledge of such abiding di vine favors, and as a further mark of His benevolent thankfulness, the Sovereign Pontiff cordially bestows upon Your Excellency and upon the priests, religious and faithful people of the Dio cese of Savannah-Atlanta His paternal Apostolic Blessing.” MARTIN LYNCH SERVICES HELD DECATUR, Ga. — Martin Jos eph (Mike) Lynch, DeKalb Coun ty Fire Chief and leader of St. Patrick’s day activities in the At lanta area for many years, died Nov. 26th. Chief Lynch a native of Leitrim County Ireland was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Georgia Firemen’s Assn., and the Harold Byrd Post of the American Legion. Survivors are his wife; daugh- Grand Knights Meet At Macon MACON, Ga. — The Winter conference of grand knights of the Knights of Columbus with the state and district deputies was held in Macon on Sunday afternoon, December 5th, with State Deputy Henry C. Taylor of Atlanta presiding. All subordi nate councils in Georgia except one was represented. In attend ance were Past State Deputy Jos. F. Kunze and District Deputy James J. O’Shea of Columbus, District Deputy Pat Rice Mulhe- rin of Augusta, and Past State Deputy John J. McCreary, Macon, state insurance chairman. All councils reported activities since the state convention in April in Columbus and formulat ed plans for compliance with the Order’s Six Point Program early in the fraternal year. Macon Council 925, of which John P. Cassidy is Grand Knight, was host to the meeting. ter, Mrs. Joseph C. Herbermann of Decatur, and five grand chil dren. ARCHBISHOP TO DEDICATE SCHOOL SAVANNAH, Ga. — His Ex cellency Archbishop Gerald P. O’Hara, D. D., J.U.D., Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, and Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain, will dedicate the new Cathedral School on Sunday December 12. The dedication service will be held in the upper church of the Cathedral at 4 p.m. and will pro-- ceed to the School site where the Archbishop will dedicate the building and give the principal address. In attendance will be the Most Rev. Francis E. Hyland, D. D., J.C.D., auxiliary Bishop, and other clergy of the city. Following the dedication, a reception will be held in the school auditorium. The Right Rev. Mosnignor T. James Mc Namara, rector of the Cathedral extends a cordial invitation to all his friends to attend the cere monies. HOLY FATHER BROADCASTS FROM SICKBED (Radio, N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE) VATICAN CITY — His Holi ness Pope Pius XII was well enough on Sunday (Dec. 5) to broadcast a radio blessing from his sickbed to the faithful gath ered in St. Peter’s Basilica for the Marian Year’s last beatifica tion. The Holy Father broadcast an other blessing to the closing cere mony of the Marian Year on Wednesday, December 8. His Eminence Eugene Cardinal Tis- serant, Dean of the Sacred Col lege, took the Pope’s place at the ceremony, a solemn Te Deum in the Basilica of St. Mary Major. At the conclusion of the beati fication’s Benediction ceremony on Sunday, at which the Holy Father would ordinarily have been present, his voice was car ried to the Basilica by loud speakers. The voice was con siderably weaker than usual, but by no means entirely spent as he extended his blessing. He said: “To our very devoted children of beloved Rome, whom We feel as close to us in prayer as We are close to the Divine Master in Our suffering, and in Our fulfill ment of His ever good and benign will, We impart with Our heart turned to the Lord and the Im maculate Virgin, Our paternal Apostolic Blessing.” After this brief message, which was also carried by the radio networks of many Western Eu ropean countires, the crowd in St. Peter’s cheered. (The Pope’s voice was heard later throughout the United States over the NBC network, which broadcast a re cording of his message followed by an English translation). The Marian year came to a close with impressive and beau tiful ceremonies at the Dio cese’s Cathedral and Atlanta’s Historic Shrine of the Immacu late Conception. His Excellency Archbishop Gerald P. O’Hara was the cele- brait of the Atlanta Pontifical Mass held at 8 in the evening. He was assisted by the Right Reve rend Monsignor Joseph G. Cas sidy, V. F., pastor of the Co- Cathedral of Christ the King as Assistant Priest; Very Reverend Harry Hayes,. S. M., pastor of Sacred Heart and the Rev. Cornelius L. Maloney, Ph. D., Superintendent of Schools as Dea cons of Honor: The Very Reve rend Andrew J. McDonald, Dea- acon; The Reverend Emmanuel Traynor, C. P., Sub-Deacon; the Rev. George T. Daly, First Mas ter of Ceremonies; the Rev. R. Donald Kiernan, Second Master of Ceremonies. The Right Reverend Monsignor Patrick J. O’Connor, Director of the National Shrine of The Im maculate Conception, Washing ton, D. C. Delivered the ser mon. The Ordinary of the Mass, “Missa Choralis” by Refice, was sung by The Catholic Men’s Choir of 30 voices under the di rection of Mrs. Howard C. Smith. The Men’s Sanctuary Choir un der the direction of Rev. Ed ward Kelly, S. M., sang the chant Proper. Thp “Magnificat” was sung by the Children’s Choir of 80 voices of the Immaculate Con ception School with Sister M. Bar bara, Director. Mrs. Homer Ed wards, Organist and Choir Di rector of the Immaculate Con ception Church presented the Pius X Boys Choir in Com munion Hymns. At the Same hour at the Ca thedral in Savannah, His Excel lency Bishop Hyland was cele brant of the Pontifical Mass. Rev. William J. Harty, S. J. of New Orleans delivered the sermon at the Mass. Assistant Priest at the Mass was Monsignor T. James McNa mara. V.F.; deacons of the throne, the Revs. Thomas A. Brennan and Raymond Geyer, O.S.B. of Blessed Sacrament Parish and Sacred Heart Parish, respectively; Deacon of the Mass, the Rev. Bede Lighter, principal of Bene dictine Military School; Subdea con Rev. Francis J. Donahue of Cathedral Parish. Masters of Ceremonies were the Rev. Micha el Regan, secretary to Bishop Hyland and the Rev. Marvin J. LeFrois of the Cathedral Parish. Music for the Savannah cere mony was supplied by the St. Vincent’s Academy Glee Club, 140 voices under the direction of Sister M. Fideles, R.S.M. Legion Of Decency Sunday At all masses Sunday. Dec. 12, Catholics of the Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta will renew their Legion of Decency Pledge.
