The tribute came from Ecclesia, organ of Spanish Catholic Action, which published the text of the 1954 statement of the U.S. Hier archy, entitled “Victory — Our Faith.” The statement warned against the threat of atheistic materialism and said that the United States must look to its spiritual strength if it is to sur vive. “This joint declaration of the North American episcopate,” Ec clesia commented, “convinces us that besides Hollywood films, America ships also a good cargo of spirituality.” Stressing that a very valuable stratum of Christianity exists in the United States, Ecclesia con tinued. “Western culture was built on the spiritual principle of Chris tianity, and neither nuclear en ergy nor international confer ences can now suffice to supplant these principles. We have heard this assurance many times. How ever, we are extremely happy that it is in the United States— so often beset by worldly and secularistic idelogies—that such a timely, consonant and authori tative confirmation of this as surance resounds.” “This proves once more.” Ec clesia added, “that the Church is truly One, and that to th^se spiri tual problems which harass our times, there is not a French Spanish or United States answer, hut the Catholic answer, based upon dogmas which are beyond geography.” Duggan Optical Co.
