IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
HOLY NAME NEWS
(By J. A. Baumgartner)
At the Shrine of the Immacu
late Conception the Holy Name
members attended the 8 o’clock
Mass Sunday June 12th. A rath
er good crowd was present with
majority staying for the meeting
held immediately after Mass in
the social hall. Continuing a
policy adopted several years ago,
the customary hot breakfast of
bacon, eggs, grits, etc., has been
eliminated during the summer
months. Instead sweet rolls arid
coffee are served rather than
discontinue the sessions. Father
Kiernan informed us he had been
appointed temporary administra
tor of the parish and the mem
bers were certainly glad to learn
of this decision. He also advised
as it was a cool day, he was ex
pecting the customary meal, but
would settle for coffee. It was
especially nice to have Monsig
nor Maloney present and we are
indeed grateful to him for the
many visits he has made to the
Shrine recently. In keeping with
the usual summer policy the cus
tomary meeting was eliminated,
instead only the necessary items
discussed.
.Vacations, to some the salty
ocean coupled with brisk bellow
ing waves, a suntan or a deep
sea fishing trip while at the oce
an side; to others who prefer
the mountains, the enchantment
of the hills, trees and wild flow
ers, the quiet warm days yet cool
evenings with country ham or
fried chicken. Whatever your
choice the time is here, the sea
son of the year to relax forget
your daily worries and enjoy
the wonders of nature. Vacation
time, of course, to most of us
means hot weather and the cus
tomary time to get away for a
few days, a week or two. Yes,
the annual trek to favorite vaca
tion spots coupled with the week
end traffic to Georgia’s many
beautiful lakes only a short dis
tance from Atlanta is already
reflected in the Holy Name gath
erings and will be the next few
months.
You will be taking your vaca
tion soon and we hope you will
accept these words of caution
and advice. Drive safely and
sanely that you may enjoy your
trip. Leave in plenty of time if
you must meet a deadline. Don’t
try to get a suntan in one day
Or over eat. Enjoy yourself, have
a good time but above all ar
range your trip so that you don’t
miss Mass on Sundays. Remem
ber God never takes a vacation.
He is with you .24 hours of ev
ery day of every week, so don’t
take a vacation from Him. While
you may be away from your par
ish on Holy Name Sunday as
well as other Sundays this sum-
rper, there is no excuse for mis
sing Mass. There are churches,
chapels and missions scattered
the length and breath of this
state. There is also no excuse
for not saying a few prayers, or
better still hte rosary each day.
The correct place, of course, is
on bended knee, but it can also
be recited while you are motoring
along. Say an extra prayer of
thanksgiving for your many bles
sings and an extra special prayer
that a lasting peace will come to
a troubled world.
The next Holy Name Sunday
is July 10th. At the Shrine of
the Immaculate Conception the
.members will assemble before
the 8 o’clock Mass as usual. Un
less you are vacationing or for
tunate to own a yacht at Altoona
we will be expecting you as usu
al. Don’t dissapoint us. Once
again we extend an invitation to
all Catholic men in the Atlanta
area to be with us on Holy Name
Sunday.
