THERESE, the foremost modern Apostle of Marian devo tions, showers her Heavenly Roses of Favor on those who wear Our Lady’s Brown Scapular and consecrate themselves to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. On Saturday, July 16, the whole Catholic world will be celebrating the universal feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. This date solemnly comemorates an occurrence which took place ov er 700 years ago in England, at the Carmelite Monastery of Aylesford, a small suburb located 27 miles from London. Handing to the aged monk the Carmelite Brown Scapular the Virgin Queen made her wondrous twofold Promise . . . both to protect all who wear her Scapular garb from life’s danger and to claim them as her special children forever at their entry into Eternity: “Receive this Brown Scapular. Whosoever dies while wearing my Scapular will never see the Eternal Flames of Hell.” To gain fulfillment of Mary’s Scapular Pledge, it' is necessary that a person be validly enrolled by a priest, wear the Scapular day and night and earnestly strive to imitate the virtues which are so beautifully reflect ed in the life of God’s Mother. St. Pius X recognized that' con ditions exist which may render the wearing of the cloth Scapular gravely inconvenient. That no one be excluded from Mary’s all-powerful inter c el s. s i: o n, Christ’s Vicar through a decree issued on Dec. 16, 1910, has ex tended all Scapular benefits and privileges to the Medal, although at the same time he urged that the cloth sacramental be worn whenever possible. For the cere mony of enrollment the cloth Scapular must be used. There after a Scapular Medal blessed . by a priest may be substituted. 'fatima and the scapular Although in ages past the Scapular has rightfully been re garded as an important medium to express filial love for God’s Mother, today this importance has greatly increased. God’s Mother through the re velations made to the three shepherd children in 1917 at Fa tima, Portugal, has indicated that the wearing of her Scapular Garb is necessary if she is to bless the world and save humini- ty from dire punishment. Lucy, the oldest of the three children to whom the declarations were given, has repeatedly emphasiz ed that the wearing of the Scap ular is an important element of the Fatima Message. Our Lady graphically demon strated this truth. For in her Fin al Apparition on Oct. 13, 1917, God’s Mother appeared clothed as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel . . . holding the Brown Scapular aloft as a beckoning Sign to all the world. And the present Holy Father in a stirring declaration on Feb. 11, 1950, re-affirmed this truth by urging all Catholics to wear Mary’s “Vestment of Salva tion” as a sign of Consecration to her Immaculate Heart. In substance Mary’s appari tions at Fatima affect every human being because she pro mises, if mankind fulfills her re quests, to intercede with her Divine Son in such fashion that disastrous wars will be averted, multitudes of souls will be saved from Hell and the Church itself will enter a new era of peace and prosperity. It behooves every person, therefore, to observe fully Mary’s Requests and also wear her Scapular as a Sign of Consecra tion that the bright hope which she extended to humanity at Fatima may soon become a liv ing reality. SPECIAL BLESSINGS ON JULY 16TH To encourage the faithful to wear the Scapular and to honor Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, the Holy See also grants a rich treas ury of Indulgences on July 16th. Each time a person visits a church or public chapel on July 16th, he can gain for each visit a Plenary -Indulgence applicable to the Souls In Purgatory. This is known as the “Toties Quoties Indulgence,” decreed on May 16, 1892, by Leo XIII.
