News From
St. John’s
(Mrs, Chas. Flesh)
HAPEVILLE. Ga. — Reverend
Joseph Frederick Ware has been
assigned to St, John the Evange
list Church, Hapeville, Ga., as as
sistant pastor. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Ware, Savan
nah, Ga., has four brothers and
one sister.
Father Ware is the Spiritual
Director of the Legion of Mary,
of the Junior and Senior Young
People’s Clubs of the Parish, of
the Holy Name Society of St.
John’s, and of the St. John Berch-
man’s Alter Boys’ Society.
We are extremely happy to
have Father Ware at St. John’s
and we wish him a long, success
ful stay at our church.
Since our last publication we
have had a change in the summer
schedule at St. Johns. The cor
rected time is: 7:00, 8:30, 10:00,
and 12:00.
The Holy Name Society of St.
John’s is going to sponsor a Ham
burger Fry on the, school grounds
on July 16, from 3 p. m. to 8 p. m.
The men promise Grade A food
and service.
St. John held Catechitical
Classes from June 6 through 24.
The .children were tutored by
Mesdames T. L. Zarworski, in
charge, and Jane Oliver, members
of the Legion of Mary, and by
Mesdames James Kennelley and
C. E. Walton. The Legion of Mary
sincerely thank Mrs. Kennelley
and Mrs. Walton for their effi
cient assistance in teaching the
-children. In addition, Mrs. Walton
taught the children singing of (he
hymns. The approximately fifty
children who attended the'se class
es were taught Catechism, Rosary
prayers, prayers to the. Blessed
Lady, hymns, and they visited.the
Blessed Sacrament daily. It was
learned by the teachers there is
great need for these classes. The
children derived much from their
teachers, but the short length of
time devoted to that kind of
study left much to be done.
The final lesson was followed
by a small party for the children,
attended by the teachers and
Fathers Daly and Ware. Religious
gifts were distributed to the chil
dren by Father Daly.
Our paper sale was a success.
Billy Jones won first prize of
$3.00; John Davis won second
prize, and William Clarke won
third prize.
ODD BUT PERTINENT
The business of giving names
to hurricanes is not without pre-
' cedence. Black Sea storms, which
arrive usually on schedule, the
National Georgraphy Society re
ports, are known as the Storm
of the Quail, Storm of the Flow
ers, Storm of the Fish. Tempest
timetables, similar’ to those used
in the early 19th century, enable
passengers to plan smooth trips.
These storms have earned the
sea itself a variety of names. Ear
ly Greek seafarers called it Axe-
nus, “Unfriendly to Strangers.”
When Greek colonies took root
from the 8th to 9th centuries B.
C., a kindlier attitude—possibly
in the hope of establishing friend
lier relations with the turbulent
waters—was adopted and Axenus
was changed to E u x i n u s,
“Friendly to Strangers.” Heavy
winter fogs that , seemed to turn
the water black gave the sea its
present name. But it still can
hardly be termed a friendly body
of water.
