Those were nothing com pared to the loss of human life, countless persons Crippled, fami lies shattered, careers blasted. Progress' Despite Difficutlies Yet despite the apparently in sufferable obstacles, the Church in Georgia under 'the leadership of the indormitable Bishop Verot could report heartening progress at the end of his decade in office. Augusta had a magnificent new church, consecrated free of debt, one of the most commodious and most beautiful edifices- in the South, and a neat new edifice was started in Atlanta. Bruns wick was given its first church. Dalton’s ruined church had been rebuilt. The Sisters of St. Joseph came from St. Augustine to start a school for colored and then to take charge of the orphanage for white boys. The Sisters of Mercy from St. Augustine had a new convent and school in Macon. Columbus and the Sisters of Mercy of Savannah a convent and school in Macon. The war had interrupted the gradual in crease in the number of priests, but the efforts of the zealous Sulpician Bishop were beginning to bear fruit in that direction also when Pope Pius IX erected the Vicariate of Florida into the Dio cese of St. Augustine, and re turned Bishop Verot to his former position as its first Bishop. There he labored with continued success until his death June 10, 1876. (Copyright 1955) ‘Gimick’ Peddlers involved Sn U, S. Wage-Hour Action MIAMI, Fla.—Secretary of La bor James P. Mitchell, through Solicitor of Labor Stuart Roth man, has asked the U. S. Court here for an order restraining two dealers of religious plastic objects from future violations of the Fed eral Fair Labor Standards Act. The employers named in the actions are Benjamin and Henry Kram, operating Ex-GI Plastic, 922 N. E. Second Avenue, and Max Kram, who operates under the name of Clearview Plastics, Catholic Products of America, and Religious Products of Ameri ca, 201 N. W. 45th Street. Both establishments are in Miami. The complaints i allege that both operators have failed to pay sev eral employees of each firm as much as 75 cents per hour which is the minimum required by the Wage and Hour law. Employees of both firms were producing re ligious materials, substantial quantities of which were sold and shipped to points outside of Flori da. Several employees of Ex-GI Plastic were alleged to have been paid at straight 'time rates for more than 40 hours in the week. The Wage and Hour law provides that covered employees should be paid time and one-half their regu lar rate for hours over 40. The complaints also alledge that both firms have failed to make, keep, and preserve adequate rec ords, and that they have violated the shipping provisions of the law by sending out of the State goods which were produced by under paid employees. Thomas Jefferson was Presi dent at that time, and two start led beholders exclaimed, “That is Jefferson!” Over the years, viewers have seen various like nesses. Hawthorne saw a story.
