ALBENIZ: Iberia (Books 1-4
complete); Navarra; and Cantos
de Espana. Jose Echaniz, piano.
Westminster WAL 219.
In “Iberia” Isaac Aibeniz cele
brates his native peninsual
through a series of twelve
“scenes” from different corners
of Spain. All are inspired by
the rhythms, harmonies and
turns of phrase of Spanish pop
ular music, particularly the
songs and dances of Andalusia.
Although perhaps Aibeniz does
not get at the heart of Andalu
sian music to the degree de Fel
la did, he does realize its es
sential features: the combination
of strong, conflicting rhythms,
the harmonic effects naturally
obtained from instruments tuned
in fourths, and the wavering,
profusely ornamented melodies
of the native “cante honde”.
Filling out the final side of
the two record set are Navarra
and Cantos de Espana. The first
named was probably ' Aibeniz’
last composition, a work left in
complete by the composer and
twenty-six measures, were added
by Severac. It is a big work de

sources on the part of the per
former. Cantos de Espano is an
earlier work that has five divi
sions that do not have to be
played together: Prelude, Orien-
tale, Sous les palmiers, Cordoba,
‘and Seguidilla.
These performances by Echan
iz are beautifully recorded by
Westminister; the piano rings
in its full range and the “over
hang” of undampened notes is
wonderfully clear and steady.
Echaniz’ playing itself seems to
me a little stiff and unyielding.
I can appreciate a conscientious
artist avoiding any romanticizing
of these melodies. Spanish music
has its own strong sweetness
and any similar importations on
the part of the performer usually
results ■ in an intolerable con
fection. Superior recording does
make this edition preferable to
that of Falgarona on Vox.
LULLY: Te Deum (Motet for
two choruses and orchestra). En
semble Vocal de Parris, Orches-
tre de la Sainte de Musique de
Cahmbre de Paris, P. Capdeviel-
le, cond. ^Westminster WL 5326.
The sturdy pomp and majesty
of Lully’s royal baroque style
are brought into sharp focus in
this superbly fashioned record
ing. Westminster’s sound conveys
with a high degree of fidelity
the blare of trumpets, the impact 1
of timpani and the vocal splend
ors of the double chorus. In the
words of a prominent music his
torian, the “Te Deum is a magni
ficent fresco still echoing the
tumult and frenzy of the battle,
for the victorious outcome of
which the thanksgiving hymn
rises to heaven. . . ” The excel
lent performance afforded here
provides a major work from a
not overly explored field of re
ligious music. Highly recom
mended.
LALANDE: De Profundis. Solo
ists, Shorus of Radio Stuttgart
and Pro Musica Orchestra, Mar
cel Courand, cond. Vox PL 9040.
While the name of Michel
Richard de Lalande may not be
precisely a household word
among music lovers, it is one
deserving more than unrelieved
neglect. Almost exactly three
hundred years ago Lalande was
born but his music still retains
more than a measure of the for
mal grace and proportion so
much a feature of serious baro
que music. ”
The performance here is ac
complished and beautifully re
corded. The overall conception
might perhaps have incorporated
a little more light and movement
but this might merely be a mat
ter of taste. More important k
the fact that the Vox company
herewith provides opportunity
for hearing a well-nigh com
pletely neglected composer of
some fine music.
