SIXTEEN THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC LAYMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA SEPTEMBER 17, 1955, itev. O’Donnell Assumes Duties In Atlanta The Reverend Flavian J. O’Don nell, O. P., has assumed his duties as a member of the community of the Church of St. Paul of the Cross, 29 West Lake Avenue, N. W., Atlanta, Ga. Father Flavian, a fiative of Bayonne, N. J., came'to, Atlanta from St. Joseph’s Passionist Mon astery, Baltimore, Md. He was or dained at the Passionist Monas tery of the Immaculate Concep tion, Jamaica, N. Y., on Feb. 8, 1931. He was also stationed at St. Mary’s Monastery, Dunkirk, N. Y While in Georgia. Father Fla vian’s main work will be the preaching of missions, retreats and Novenas. He has spent most of his priestly life in this type of work. He has conducted parish missions and religious retreats in most of the eastern states and in Canada. Before coming to Atlanta, he preached the annual retreats for the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart, Mary wood College, Scranton,- Penn. His first assignment in Atlanta has been the preaching of the annual re treat for the Sisters at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Free Cancer Home, Atlanta. Georgia is npt new to Father Flavian. He said that he enjoyed the kindness, consideration and hospitality of the people and cler gy of the Peach' State, while he was an Army Chaplain at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Ga. He was sta tioned at this camp with the 5th Inf. Tr. Bn. He was also stationed in Africa and Italy with the 300th General Hospital and the 392nd Station Hospital. Father Flavian will be avail able for the preaching of parish missions, retreats, novenas and re ligious retreats. Joiner, Sr., were married Sept. 3rd at the Death Claims Man Who Jailed Fatima Children In 1917 LISBON, Portugal, Sept. 3 (NC)—Death has claimed the man who jailed and threatened the three children to whom Our Lady of Fatima appeared in 1917. It has just been announced that Arturo de Oliveira dos San tos, former administrator of the district of Vila Nova do Ourem, died here at the age of 71. Senor Santos had always maintained close silence on the events at Fatima. It is not known whether he died recon ciled with the Church. Lucia, now a Carmelite nun, is the only survivor of the three children. Francisco died on April 4, 1919, and Jacinta on February 23, 1920. In a brief summary of the Fatima story written for the Catholic Encyclopedia, Father Cyril C. Martindale, S.J., of Eng land, described the administrator of Qurem as a Freemason. The following is the account he gives of the imprisoning' of Lucia and her two companions in an at tempt to make them divulge the “secret” imparted to them by Our Lady: “The young freemason ad- Holy Family Church, Father John J. On Au gust 13, he actually kidnapped all three, . locked them up, put them next day in a foul jail (where they soon had all the prisoners praying), fetched them out, and said he would fry them in oil if they would not reveal the secret. . “Jacinta was taken first; the guard returned to say she was dead. Francisco followed. Final ly Lucia was brought; she found the two alive. The children were then taken home , , , In compen sation the children saw the Lady on August 19 at Valinhos. She said the kidnapping would render the miracle (for which. Lucia had begged) less grandi ose, but that on October 13 they would see St. Joseph and the Holy Child, and Our Lord bles sing the people. Murphy, pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish, has an nounced plans for a Building Fund Campaign with an objective of $75,000 to defray the cost of construcing a new 5-classroom school and a new convent. Public announcement of the drive, Fath er Murphy said, was withheld pending the preliminary organiza tion of the necessary committees. Prominent laymen of Our Lady of Peace parish have already ac cepted important committee posts and their names will be made public shortly. The formal opening of the Building Fund Campaign is scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd. The Most Rev. John J. Rus sell, Bishop of Charleston, has ac cepted the position of Honorary General Chairman of the Cam paign with Father Murphy as Honorary Executive Chairman.
