A look at the 1955 Fighting
Irish Football Dope Book reveals
that the coaching staff at Notre
Dame is once more singing the
blues. This time, it appears, they
have good cause for doing so for
no team can lose rush linemen
like Shannon, Matz, Palumbo,
Varrichione, Lee and Szymanski
without being seriously weak
ened. Add backs like Guglielmi,
Heap and Carey to your list of
graduates and total the damage.
With a schedule which includes
Miami, Navy, Southern Meth
odist, Michigan State, Purdue,
Southern Cal and Iowa, Terry
Brennan needs to find some re
placements to fill the gaps. How
ever, Notre Dame can be counted
on to give any opponent trouble.
Look for Paul Hornung (pro
nounced Horneeg), junior from
Flaget High in Louisville, Ken
tucky, to take over the quarter
back duties and lead the Irish
to a winning season in spite of
the loss of 17 lettermen. Ray
Lemek, senior guard and captain
of the team will also be a likely
candidate for national honors,
provided that the knee injury
he suffered in last years South
ern California game doesn’t give
him too much trouble. Frank
Leahy is back at South Bend
but this time it is Junior, a
quarterback candidate.
Harking back to the College
All-Star game in Chicago, two
of the Notre Dame graduates
mentioned above were stand
outs. Sam Palumbo handled the
big Cleveland pros with ease and
grace in the .line and Guglielemi
called the plays and threw the
passes in a high fashion. The
player who caught this eye,
however, was Henry Hair, for
mer Marist College athlete who
went on to play outstanding end
for Georgia Tech. Henry scored
one touchdown on a pass from
Guglielmi but his real worth to
the college team against the
Cleveland Browns could best be
measured by the fact that he
played the entire game on the
offensive team. His ro 11 i n g
blocks opened the way for sev
eral nice runs and his role as a
decoy usually managed to keep
the Browns so busy watching
him that others of the All-Stars
were wide open for passes. The
pro team showed a great deal
of respect for his pass catching
ability and one could almost hear
a moan from the Los Angeles
staff which had drafted Hair'for
play on their team. Seems the
military forces want Hair, too,
and they usually have the final
say so.
