In addition to its work in the
field of vocations, Serra assists
in the formation of Catholic lay
leaders by means of the programs
carried on in local clubs. These
programs help the carefully se
lected members to understand
in some detail the present intel
lectual, cultural and spiritual si
tuation, how to judge civic,
economic and social problems
jn the light of Catholic teaching,
and the importance of assuming
Christian responsibilities in then-
respective fields of activity.
The Serra organization has 120
clubs in 72 diocese and arch
diocese in 37 states in the U. S.,
in Canada, and Puerto Rico, with
.Lima, Peru, the first chartered
South American group. There
are over 6,000 members in Serra
International.
The Serra Club of Metropo
litan Atlanta, though chartered
in May of this year, began at a
meeting of the following men,
who met in the Fall of 1954 to
determine if there was sufficient
interest in Serra to organize a
club: Messrs. William ,E Beck-
ley, Richard Kane, Hughes
Spalding, Jr., Edward H. Robert
son, Damon J. Swann, Lawrence
LaBonte, William Q. Egan, Wal
ter Taylor, Thomas Hurley, and
Dr. Kenneth Fitzgerald. Mr. Har
ry O’Haire, Executive Secretary
of Serra International, attended
•one of the initial organization
meetings.
Before the final organization
plans were complete, the enthu
siastic approval of the organiza
tion of The Serra Club of Metro
politan Atlanta was granted by
His Excellency Archbishop Ger
ald P. O’Hara.
The Serra Club of Metropoli
tan Atlanta will soon be one year
of age. Its trustees and officers
are: Hughes Spalding, Jr., Wil
liam Q. Egan, Thomas Hurley,
Trustees; Richard Kane, Presi
dent, Lawrence LaBonte, 1st
Vice-President, William E. Beck-
ley, 2nd Vice-President, Damon
J. Swann, Treasurer, and Edward
H. Robertson, Secretary.
The club has 36 members at
Squire Circle
For Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ga.—'The second
Columbian Squire Circle to be or
ganized in Georgia was instituted
September 11. The new unit, to be
known as the Joseph Hall Circle
in memory of the late Joseph
Hall, of Columbus, is sponsored by
Bishop Gross Council.
The initiation program was con
ducted by the staff of Msgr. Grady
Circle of Atlatna under the direc
tion of Eugene Lorenz, chief
counsellor. The charter class was
made up of the following boys be
tween the ages of 14 and 18:
Robert Me Waters, John Dupree,
William Fortson, Jr., William Gig-
ilo, Robert Gigilo, Eugene Burch,
Phillip Fannin, Joseph Batastini,
Jr., Billy Baird, Billy Wright, Jim
Naehr, Jerry Naehr, Robert Crane,
Michael Dreyer, Ernest Garcia,
Charles Hurst, Frank Craine,, Jr.,
David Allen, Paul Roy, Ted Glass.
