poor posture.

Typewriter Portrait Features
Hetuber Of Holy Family Parish
By Constance Johnson
Columbus, Ga.
Reproduced below is Constanle
Johnson s Typewriter Portrait
which recently featured Mrs. J.
,1. Spano.
j The Muscogee Council of the
Parent-Teachers Association has
selected a president for this year,
who, by almost any yardstick,
should be a perfect choice for the
job.
Mrs. Joseph J. Spano has two
young children, aged 10 and 12,
she is a past president of the
P.T.A. unit at Holy Family
School, and she has 12 years
teaching experience behind her.
Moreover,; she is equipped with
enough energy to supply TVA,
and a sense of humor that would
make Bob Hope and Danny Kaye
ivious.
Of her teaching experience,
Sara Spano recalls that she
taught the third grade for six
years;, then I learned a little
more and they moved me up to
the fourth grade.”
Despite her ample qualifica
tions for the job, Mrs. Spano was
reluctant to take on leadership
of the P.T.A. Council. “I can’t
do it,” she said self-doubtingly,
to her husband. “Of course you
can; you can do anything.” he
encouraged her.
“Now when your husband
says something like that, you at
least have to try,” she explain
ed.
YOUR FAVORITE FURNITURE
OR DEPARTMENT STORE
(MADE IN AUGUSTA)
Sara Kennon Spano was born
in Salem, Ala., “at an early age.”
as she tells it, though to judge
from her sparkling brown eyes,
dark, slightly gray-flected hair
and tremendous vitality, it could
not have been too long ago. Af
ter finishing high school in Au
burn, Ala., she went to State
Teachers’ College in Athens, a
unit in the University of Georgia
system. There she- obtained a
teacher’s certificate, and in 1930
began teaching the third grade
at Fort Benning.
“I know practically every
commanding general In the Ar
my—I taught them in the third
grade,” she laughingly exag
gerates. After a few years of
teaching, she became engaged
to be married, but times were
rather tight and like a lot of
couples, there was the financial
angle to be considered. At that
time, public school teachers lost
their positions if they married.
Sara was under the impression
that this also applied to post
teachers.
However, she and Joseph de
cided to write the Fort Benning
commanding general and ask if
she could marry and still keep
her job. “He wrote right back
for us to go ahead— I don’t
think he had ever heard about
the public school ruling, but he
should have thought it unusual
with all seven teachers on the
post unmarried. I think he was
pleased to see us get off!”
Mrs. Spano taught at the post
for two more years, then left the
school room and started helping
her husband with the family
business, Spano’s Restaurant. As
hostess in the dining room two
nights each week she finds ful
fillment of her favorite hobby-
people. “I love people, even
when they are hungry, and hun
gry people are sometimes inclin
ed to be irritable. However, once
they have eaten, that changes.”
When the Spano’s two chil
dren, Kenny (for Kennon) and
Kathryn, started to school at
what was then St. Joseph’s Aca
demy, now Holy Family, Mrs.
Spano joined the Parent Teach
ers Association.
“I didn’t know anything about
it then. I used to pray for some
one to come along and rescue me
from P.T.A. It always met on the
hottest day in the year, or when
it was raining or when the chil
dren were sick, or something.
And like a' lot of people, I
thought of it as a ’woman’s or
ganization’.”
Today, however, Mrs. Spano
has done an about-face on her
attitude toward the P.T.A. One
reason is her" husband, who
thinks that education of the
children is the responsibility of
BOTH parents. He is, she states,
her strongest backer. Some sort
of idea of the teamwork between
these two is her observation:
“When a couple works together
either in raising a family, or
running a business, it’s bound
to be effective.”
Three Projects for Year
Mrs. Spano had just been to
two P.T.A. meetings, and was
very responsive to all questions
about the Council’s work this
year. “We’ve got three main
projects, and good ones too,” she
explained.
. “First, is a permanent build
ing for the state P.T.A. Congress
headquarters, to be built in At
lanta.” The statewide group now
has $65,000 toward the - building,
and $1 more from each P.T.A.
member in the state would be
enough to get the construction
paid for this year, she said.
A second project is the “Know
Your Schools,” program, with
the goal of reaching every par
ent, every citizen in the county
with more information about our
present school system and the
outlook’ for the future.
The third project is to educate
the public to the benefits of flu
orides. Last year, this was the
number one project of the P.T.A.
Council, but since nothing has
been done about fluoridation
yet, the - Council intends to con
tinue its efforts to inform the
public about this means of pro
moting better dental health
among youngsters and adults.
