FATHER HARTY
14,000 Hear
Father Harty
By John A. Graves

CANTERBURY, England,
Sept. 26 — Fourteen thousand
men, gathered here for England’s
national pilgrimage, heard an
American priest link the Catho
licism of the Uunited States to
the heritage of Canterbury.
Father William Harty, S. J.,
rector of Holy Name University
Church, New Orleans, spoke at
an open air service close to Eng
land’s great pre-Reformation Ca
thedral of Canterbury, now in
Protestant hands.
“Though separated from Eng
land in government by the War
of Independence, the young re
public across the sea was spiri
tually united in the Faith to a
land made Catholic by Augus
tine at Canterbury and where
today you and I, of different na
tionality, are united and one in
the possession of that Faith
which Jesus Christ entrusted to
His Apostles,” Father Harty told
the pilgrims.
“You can understand the emo
tions which fill my soul this
afternoon as I, a citizen of the
United States of America — as
nations are reckoned, a young
one—stand here at this venerable
spot which has witnessed the
birth of the Catholic Church in
this old and historic country
that is England well nigh 1400
years ago—here where Thomas
Becket, Archbishop of Canter
bury and Primate of England,
defended the sacred rights of
God’s Church against the rapaci
ous greed of a sovereign well
nigh 700 years ago.”
Father Harty said it was a
“distinct privilege” to have been
invited by Bishop Cowderoy,
whose diocese includes Canter
bury, during his recent tour of
the United States to address the
national pilgrimage on “this holy
and historic spot which is re
vered not only by you of English
heritage but by the whole
world.” He recalled that it was
here that Catholicism was
brought to the West from Rome
at the command of Pope Grego
ry the Great by Saint Augus
tine in the year 597. The magni
ficent edifice built by Augustine
and his Benedictine monks, he
said, still throws “its majestic
and historic shadow over Eng
land.”
Father Harty recalled the
saintliness and heroism of St.
Thomas Becket, called a traitor
by his king for rendering to God
the things . that are God's and
murdered in the Cathedral by
the knights of Henry II in 1170.
He noted that at once a great
devotion arose throughout Chris
tendom to the martyred Arch
bishop. The great and valuable
shrine madness” of King Henry
VIII.
