Development
Grant Received
By Belmont
BELMONT, N.C. — An unre
stricted grant for the development
of its senior college program has
been received by Belmont Abbey
College from the Bryan Family
Foundation, Inc., according to an
announcement by the Rt. Rev.
Vincent G. Taylor, O.S.B, presi
dent of the . college. The Founda
tion has been' established by Mr
and Mrs. Joseph M. Bryan, of
Greensboro, N. C., and their chil
dren, for educational, cultural,
and general philanthropic pur
poses.
Mr. Bryan is the Senior Vice
President of the Jefferson Stand
ard Life Insurance Company and
also President of the Jefferson
Standard Broadcasting Company
which operates Radio Station
WBT and Television Station
WBTV in Charlotte and Televi
sion Station WBTW in Florence,
S. C. Mrs. Bryan is the former
Kathleen Price, daughter of the
late Julian Price, for many years
President of the Jefferson Stand
ard Life Insurance Company.
The grant to Belmont Abbey
College is the first made by the
newly formed Foundation.

Survivors are his wife and a

Announce Lenten Ssfieiule For
Sacred Heart Church, Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. —The sche
dule of services in Sacred Heart
Church Savannah has been an
nounced by the Very Reverend
Father Robert, O.S.B.. Pastor. A
series of sermons under the gen
eral title of “The Church” will be
delivered by the Benedictine
Fathers on Sundays and Friday
nights.
The opening sebmon was
preached on Friday, February
17th by Father Damian, O.S.B. on
the topic “The Church.” Follow
ing the opening sermon the series
will continue with Father Robert
speaking on “The Marks of the
Church”; ’February 19th: Father
Raymond, “The Catholic Church”
February 24th; Father Philip,
“Membership in Church” Februa

for 1955, was recently announced
by Roland W. Gann, chairman of
the “Young MaA of the Year”
committee of the Atlanta Junior
Chamber of Commerce. The
judges included prominent Atlan
tans: Oby T. Brewer, Donald M.
Hasings, and Ernest Rogers.
Salfen is a vice president of the
United States Junior Chamber of
Commerce. He is a past president
of the Georgia Junior Chamber of
Commerce and has held many
other Jaycee offices. He was
chairman of the board of the 1955
national Jaycee convention in At
lanta.
He has worked for the Empty
Stocking Fund in various leader
ship posts. In 1952, 1953 and 1954,
he received the State Certificate
of Merit Award., Salfen is a mem
ber of the 1956 local affairs com
mittee of the Atlanta Chamber of
Commerce. He is a past member
of the board of directors of the
Atlanta Chamber.
He is a member of the Atlanta
Fund Appeals Review Board,
chief of the air division of the
National Defense Transportation
Association’s Civil Defense com
mittee, and a member of the
board of directors of the Georgia
Mental Health Association. He is
secretary of the Georgia State
Chamber of Commerce Education
Committee.
A member of the board of direc
tors of the Georgia State Chamber
of Commerce, he was named to
the President’s White House Com
mittee on Education by the Gov
ernor of the State of Georgia.
At the invitation of the Pres
ident of the United States, he at
tended the White House Confer
ence on Education last December.
Salfen attended the University
of Missouri and' majored in busi
ness administration at the Univer
sity of Georgia. He served with
the 9th Air Force in Europe dur
ing World War II. He is squadron
training officer of the 9970th Air
Reserve Squadron.
Formerly a member of St. An
thony’s Parish in Atlanta, he
now is a member of St. Thomas
During Lent services will be
conducted on Sundays at 8 p. m.,
consisting of Rosary, Lithany, Ser
mon and Benediction; on Wednes
days at 8 p.m., there will be Sta
tions of the Cross and Benedic
tion; Stations of the Cross will be
recited every Friday also at 11
a.m.; Fridays at 8 p.m., there will,
be Sacred Heart Novena prayers,
sermon and Benediction.
The weekday Masses during
Lent will be offered at 6:30. 7:00,
7:30 and 8:30. Besides the usual .
hours of Confessions on Satur
days, Confessions will be heard
before the daily Masses. Confes
sions likewise will be heard after
the evening devotions.
During Holy Week the New
Liturgy prescribed by the Church
will be carried out. Solemn Bles
sing of the Palms will precede
the Solemn High Mass on Palm
Sunday at 10.30. On Holy Thurs
day, Solemn High Mass will be
offered at 5 p. m.. followed by the
Procession to the Repository. Ho
ly Hour on Holy Thursday-9-10
p.m. On Good Friday Mass of the
Pre-Sanctified and the Veneration
of the Cross will begin at 3 p.m.
Stations of the Cross will be recit
ed on Good Friday night at 8
o’clock. The Easter Vigil will be
conducted Easter Saturday night
about 10:30.

sons, he lives at 4048 Fama Drive,
N. E. At St. Thomas More he is
active with the cub pack and is
chairman of special events and
civil defense.
In conjunction with the honor
of Atlanta’s .Young Man of the
Year, he is to be honored by the
Atlanta Junior of Commerce at a
luncheon in mid-February, when
he will be presented the Dis
tinguished Service Award.
It is more or less a foregone
conclusion that before the ink
dries on this story, Harold J. Sal
fen, in his eagerness to serve oth
ers, will “hit the press’ again.

Inquiries
NEW HAVEN, Conn., (NC) —
A total of 387,919 inquiries re
sulted during 1955 from the
Knights of Columbus advertising
campaign to make better known
the truths and teaching's of the
Catholic Church, it was reported
at K. of C. headquarters here.
The record-breaking number of
inquiries during the eighth year
of the campaign, it was announc
ed, averaged 1,060 a day includ
ing Saturdays and Sundays.
The 1955 inquiries brought the
grand total during the eight years
up to 2,114,649, it was disclosed.
Total number of enrollments for
instruction ip the Catholic Faith
as a result of the ads was 208,-
447, the announcement stated.
The advertisements appear in
the nation’s leading newspapers,
magazines and supplements of
Sunday newspapers.
Stevens Mitchell
New President
ATLANTA, Ga. — Stephens
Mitchell has been named presi
dent of the Atlanta Historical
Society.
Mr. Mitchell has been editor
of the Bulletin Society for more
than 15 years, and has been
prominently active in the affairs
of the society for many years.
