ALBANY DINNER
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION TEAM
WINS DUCKPIN LEAGUE CROWN
(By J. Alton Baumgartner)
ATLANTA, Ga. — The city
Sunday School Bowling League
in Atlanta, recently completed
one of its most successful sea
sons. From the opening gun last
September and for 33 consecu
tive weeks, interest, anxiety and
keen competition existed. As
happens almost every year the
battle for the crown was so close
it wasn’t decided until the final
game on the last night of the
season.
The Immaculate Conception
team won the crown but only
after a remarkable stretch drive
and an illogical climax to a
duckpin season. At the end of
the first round, or 33 games the
Immaculate Conception team
was tied for first place with 20
wins and 13 losses. The next
round was a different story for
at one point, the team was in
4th place, nine games off the
pace. The final round resulted
in victory, as two-thirds of the
33 games were won.
Each week the team was over
taking the leaders, slowly but
consistently, so that on the fin
al night of the season with 3
games to be bowled, the I C Club
was out in front by one game.
After the first 2 games, a tie
existed for first place and all
hinged on the final game. It ap
peared all was lost as the final
frame of the last game was rol
led, and then the unbelievable
occurred. A double-header (2
Consecutive , strikes) by Rene
Martin in the last frame and a
double-header in the 9th and
,10th boxes with a spare count
by Eddie Gasperini brought
yells, shouts and screams from
the team members is putting it
mildly. The game was won,
Championship assured and once
again the Immaculate Concep
tion Club emerged victors.
Although the Immaculate
Conception team has won the
title a number of times the past
20 years including 4 times the
past 7 years, they are quite proud
of this recent accomplishment.
Other members of the team be
sides, Rene Martin and Eddie
Gasperini, are W. H. (Dick) Gil-
lelana, J. Alton Baumgartner,
Dan Keegan, Bobbie Weymouth
and Carl Baumgartner.
Warner Hill Class from St.
Mark’s Methodist and Druid
Hills Methodist finished second
and third. Other classes and
churches comprising the 12 team
league, include Four Square
Class from Druid Hills Baptist,
YOMACO of First Methodist,
Grace Methodist, Wieuca Bap
tist, Gordon Street Presbyterian
Druid Hills Presbyterian, Edge-
wood Baptist and two teams
from the Associated Reformed
Presbyterian Church, one bowl
ing under the church name and
the other representing the O’Far
rell Class.
Individual awards were won
by Bob Wiggins of St. Marks
with a high game of 157. Dick
Gilleland of Immaculate Con
ception and Ernie Moore of
Grace Methodist tied for high
set with 391. The team high
game and high set prizes were
won by Four Square Class and
Warner Hill Class respectively.
Father And Daughter Sunday Held At
Shrine Of Immaculate Conception
ATLANTA, Ga.—Sunday, May
13th was quite a day at the
Shrine of the Immaculate Con
ception. It was Mother’s Day, Ho
ly Name Sunday and Solicita
tion Day for the Diocese of Sav-
annah-Atlanta Fund Campaign.
The Holy Name Society attend
ed the 8 o’clock Mass as usual
and later assembled for a break
fast meeting in the Social Hall.
It was also Father and Daughter
Sunday and a much better than
average group was present. While
we do not have the exact count
of the number receiving commu
nion, we know that over 125 at
tended the meeting, a remark
able number considering the
many activities of the day.
Monsignor Kirk expressed his
appreciation to the Holy Name
Society for the part they had in
encouraging' so many to receive
Holy Communion. As the good
Monsignor said, he couldn’t re
call seeing this many people at
the communion rail since his as
signment to the parish.
The program chairman, Andy
Dooley, is to be congratulated in
securing and planning such a de
lightful session. Lt. Bob Garey
of the Bureau of Prisons was
our special guest and showed a
number of color slides on prison
life at the Atlanta Penitentiary.
As the pictures were shown
covering various scenes around
the institution, from the time an
inmate is admitted, Lt. Gary ex
plained the function at each
point. He also had shots from the
farm, greenhouses, schools,
shops, athletic field, security
posts and the cell blocks. It was
an interesting program and we
are indebted to Lt. Garey.
It was certainly nice to have
Father Kiernan back with us on
Holy Name Sunday. It seems he
has been making a speaking tour
of the other parishes. Father
Kiernan was guest speaker at
St. Thomas More Holy Name
Society in April and at St. An
thony’s in March. We have mis
sed Father Kiernan especially his
jokes.
Thanks to our president, Ed
die Gasperine, eight lovely
cushions were presented as door
prizes. As we were paying par
ticular homage to the daughters
present, they won most of the
prizes.
June 10th is the next Holy
Name Sunday. Vacations, sea
shores, mountain retreats, fish
ing are only a few of the attrac
tions as hot weather ushers in
the summer season. Whatever
you plan to do, or go, don’t over
look the importance of receiving
Holy Communion at least once
a month. The best way to keep
this habit is by regular attend
ance with the Holy Name Socie
ty in your Parish. At the Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception,
we meet as usual at 7:45 for
rosary and attend the 8 o’clock
Mass. Will you be there?
