SACRED HEART JUNIOR COLLEGE BUILDS CHARACTER

BELMONT, N. C.—Nodding knowingly in the general
direction of Sacred Heart, a passerby once remarked, “That’s
where they make them Catholic women.”
Whether the above comment was directed toward the
novitiate or the Junior College, we can’t be sure, but if we
suppose that it was meant as a bit of enlightenment on the
functions and finished product of the college, it was a good
observation, from a passerby. -
And what are women made of?
There’s the “sugar’n Spice’n ev
erything nice” of-nursery rhyme
days, with sometimes the sugar
accentuatul, sometimes the spice.
In maturity there is the gentle
ness of feminity and the strength
of womanhood. The attributes of
the valiant woman of the Scrip
tures, and there’s the humility
and purity of the other woman,
whose fiat shook the heavens
and saved the earth.
The Catholic woman is made
of faith and hope, and above all,
love. She is made, of all the gifts
and fruits with which the Holy
Spirit has deigned to bejewel
her soul-wisdom and under
standing, and knowledge and
piety, and all the rest. And be
cause she is a woman she is

full of “givingness,” and self for
getfulness, and the Sacred Heart
girl, like every other girl, will
learn that the more she lives
for others, the more a woman
and the less a little girl, she will
be.
“Those red buildings among
the trees? That’s Sacred Heart,
where they teach girls to be
come women, in the most sacred
sense of the word.”
When students are asked what,
they like about Sacred Heart,
the answer invariably is “the
atmosphere of the place and the
spirit of the girls, as well as the
opportunity of meeting so many
people from all over.” At Sacred
Heart a cosmopolitan atmosphere
pervades with girls from all ov
er the world and all races are
represented, living and working
together like a happy family.
Emphasis is placed upon scho
larship and students are trained
to meet the challenge of our
times by a basic grounding in
the humanities, history literature
and philosophy. In addition to
this a girl may specialize in sci

ing, principles of design and His
tory of Art, or education courses;
in.Home Economics in order to
better prepare herself for the
role of Christian wife and moth
er or as a basis for further work
in a senior college.
The academic program is bal
anced by* co-curricular activities
including: sports and athletics,
dramatics, frequent dances and
socials,, attendance at operas and
concerts, active literary, historic
al and writers clubs. Frequent
speakers, ( movies, lecturers and
concerts are provided and na
tionally known speakers and
musicians often appear.

function as separate institutions.
Some people may \not know
what they are talking about, but
they’d be right if they did.
Attending' to your owq business
