Problems On The Home Front
(By Sister M. Honora, President, Marygrove College, Detroit)
Before getting into a discussion of the postgraduation responsibilities of Catholic women
who have had the privilege of a college education, it may be well to dispose of the 100 per
cent fallacy that plagues the minds of many good people.
HlllYlOn norfrw'winnnn In ^nTrnv, J xV _ r - 7 - .
Human performance is never
100 per cent. When, therefore,
we begin to look for Catholic
college graduates in civic and
social action, we should not be
discouraged—or cynical—if we
do not find all of them there, or
each of them doing all we think
she should. Actually there are in
every diocese and community in
the country a conspicuous num
ber of college women rendering
generous and persevering serv
ice, whatever the figures may be
percentage-wise.
The need for many, many
more Catholic college trained
women in these fields has, how
ever, never been more pressing.
Technical advances have brought
comfort without security, ma
terial progress without peace. If
Christianity is to save the world,
it has to help it meet its prob
lems on the home front, where
life is lived out day by day. That
is why the Holy Father has cal
led on Catholic women to “be
present everywhere for the faith,
for Christ, in every way, where-
ever vital interests are at stake.”
And it is to get women ready for
the “everywhere” that the Cath
olic women’s colleges exist.
NOTHING VAGUE
ABOUT LEADERSHIP
Obviously, the Holy Father re
ferred in his injunction not
merely to physical presence at
key spots of human activity, but
to complete intellectual, moral,
and spiritual presence—ih other
words, to effective leadership.
This requires knowledge of con
crete facts, understanding of the
background and techniques of
the field of action, ideals and
principles by which judgments
can be made and conduct guid
ed.
There is nothing vague about
leadership. It means, very
simply, influencing others ini
the direction of one's own
ideas and ideals. A leader
needs both, and must have, be
sides, the facility to get them
over to others.
We expect people, to come out
of college with ideas: with a
fund of sound general knowl
edge, and with a deeper, broad
er understanding of one or two
fields of special interest. The lat
ter will be the springboard for
influence in the person’s profes
sional life and may wisely be
drawn on for specific types of
volunteer action.
The important .thing that
Catholic colleges and students
want to remember about intel
lectual training is that if it be
true that Catholics have been
behindhand with ideas, it is, as
Cardinal Suhard comments, no
virtue. Further, as Pius XII em
phasizes, Catholic students must
study and strive to become the
best—the best teachers, lawyers,
men of letters, doctors, physi
ologists, investigators of matter
and spirit, of truth, of humanity
and the social good.

THIS IS JUST A SMALL FISH!
The life of a missionary calls for many skills and in this case,
Father James Spils, S.J., proves himself among other things to be
an expert fisherman, as he shows off a 35-pound salmon. In his
16 years in Alaska he has also designed and built -a number of
Jesuit institutions including Holy Cross Mission. Added to his
problems recently is a series of the worst floods at the mission
in many years, for which the Air Force has lent assistance in
bombing ice jams. Father Spils is also important planner of the
Copper Center Jesuit grade and high school being built in the
Yukon. The Ursuline nun is not identified. (NC Photos)
