olic boys from -Georgia have regis
tered for the -fall term at Bel
mont Abbey College, Belmont,
N. C., which began its eighty-first
academic year last Friday.
Enrolled in the freshman class
are Richard J. Grose, son of Mrs.
P. F. Yongue of Augusta; Robert
O. Tobin, son of Mrs. Helen Tobin
of Augusta; Marinus Adrian
Wyndelts, III, son of Mr. and Mrs.
M. A. Wyndelts, Jr. of Atlanta.
Entering as sophomores are Par-
rick A. Cusick, son of Mr. and
Mrs. John H. Daly of Rome; and
William B. Daqiel, son of Mrs.
Eleanor Athearn of Augusta.

Louis Anthony Sievers, Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Sievers of
Savannah, is beginning his fourth
year at Belmont Abbey College,
and will be a candidate in June
for the Bachelor of Arts degree,
majoring in Business Admini
stration. He has been elected vice
president of the Student Council.

Gives Blessing
LONDON, (NC) — Archbishop
Gerald P. O’Hara, Bishop of Sav
annah and Apostolic Delegate to
Great Britain, gave the absolution
at the funeral of Archbishop Ed
ward Myers, coadjutor to the late
Cardinal Griffin, in Westminster
Cathedral.
Among those attending the
funeral were Bishop John F.
Dearden of Pittsburgh and his
auxiliary, Bishop Coleman F.
Carroll.
The Requiem was sung by Aux
iliary Bishop George Craven of
Westminster, who was chosen
Vicar Capitular of the See on
Cardinal Griffin’s death.
CONSECRATE 41 ST
NATIVE BISHOP
VELLORE, India, (NC)—Bishop
David Mariyanayagam of the
Saiesians of Don Bosco has been
consecrated here as Bishop of Vel
lore, becoming the 41st native
bishop of India.
Following the death of Bishop
Paul Mariaselvam of Vellore in
June, 1954, Bishop-elect Mariy
anayagam acted as Apostolic Ad
ministrator of the see.
The Vellore diacese has bout
33,GOO Catholics. Co-consecrators
at the ceremony were Bishops
Stefano Ferrando of Shillong and
Rejarethinam Arokiaswami Sun-
daram of Tanjore. Among 11 pre
lates present at the consecration
was American-born Bishop Louis
Morrow, S.D.B., of Krishnagar.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Solemn
Pontifical Requiem Mass was of
fered for Mrs. Sarah R. Hyland,
wife of the late James J. Hyland,
on Tuesday, September 18, in the
Church of St. Francis de Sales,
Philadelphia. Mother of the Most
Rev. Francis E. Hyland, Bishop-
elect of Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Hyland
died at her. home, 1007 ,S. 47th St.,
on September 13 after a long ill
ness, at the age of 81.
ASSISTING BISHOP
Bishop Hyland was celebrant of
the Requiem Mass. The Rev. John
J. Sefton was assistant priest; the
Rev. Joseph B. Curran was
deacon; the Rev. Joseph P. Ker
rigan, sub-deacon. The Rt. Rev.
Msgr. Joseph M. Corr was master
of ceremonies, assisted by the
Rev. Daniel J. Gallagher.
Assisting in the sanctuary was
the Most Rev. John F. O’Hara,
C.S.C., Archbishop of Phila
delphia, Hong with Auxiliary
Bishops J. Carroll McCormick and
Joseph McShea, of Philadelphia;
Bishop George L. Leech of Harris
burg, and Bishop-elect Hubert J.
COLUMBUS, Ga. — Frank J.
Sheed, well know author lecturer
and founder of Sheed and Ward
Publishers, will be the principal
speaker at the 41st annual con
vention of the Catholic Laymen’s
Association of Georgia, October
27th and 28th.
Scheduled to speak at the Sun
day afternoon luncheon Mr. Sheed
has chosen “Religion on the
street corner” as his topic. He

of the Catholic Evidence Guild
whose purpose it is to teach Cath
olic doctrine and explain the
Catholic Point of view. Mr. Sheed
has addressed thousands of these
outdoor meetings both in England
and America.
Mr. Sheed is the author of such
books as “Society and Sanity,”
Theology and Sanity, “Nullity of
Marriage,” “Communism and

In attendance were more than
twenty priests from all parts of
Georgia, who made the trip to
participate in the dedication of
this new Mission of St. Patrick’s
which serves the rapidly expand
ing number of Catholics in the
Fleming area.

mon was Monsignor Joseph E.
Cox, Ph.D., pastor of St. John’s
Church, Philadelphia.
Built on land donated by Mrs.
Bessie Sherling of Fleming
Heights and her daughter, Bever
ly Joe, in memory of J. G. Sher
ling, the exterior presents the
clean lines of concrete block con
struction interspersed at regular
intervals with foundation-to-roof
louvered windows.
In front, these evemy-spaced
vertical windows form a back
ground for a plain, 30-foot cross
set in a' brick foundation.
Within the church itself, the
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Very
ReV. John J. Kennedy, V.F.,
pastor of St. Mary’s-on-the-
Hill Church' announces the sign
ing of a $175,000 contract ior the
new Catholic High School here.
Contractors will be William B.
Kuhlke Co., of Augusta, who will
construct the co-institutional
school on Wheeles Road near
Daniel Field.
To be errected on a 20 acre site,
the new school will be built of
brick, steel and concrete with
rigid frame supports, acoustical
tile suspended ceiling, continuous
steel window units, metal roof
ing and concrete with tile floors.
Containing the most modern
educational facilities, the school
will cover 24,000 square feet and
contain 12 classrooms, library,
chapel, cafeteria, science labora
tories and other specialized
departments.
To be constructed in the form
of a Cross, the new school will
replace two existing Catholic
Man” and many others.
Headquarters of the 41st con
vention will be at the Ralston
Hotel. Program plans are nearing
completion for the two day meet
ing which will open on the after
noon of the 27th.

basic simplicity of design is car
ried out. Floor to floor oak sup
porting beams, suggesting a vault
ed ceiling, lead to the sanctuary
which is separated from the main
part of the church by a wrought-
iron supported, wooden commu
nion rail.
In the recessed sanctuary on a
raised level, a plain, black marble
altar becomes the focal point of
the overall interior design. On
the center of the altar is placed
an unusually designed, rectangu
lar tabernacle given to the church
by Miss Nelly Feeney.
Suspended above the altar is an
eight-foot cross with a four-foot
corpus.
Flanking the sanctuary and in
side the communion rail are wood
statues hand-carved in Italy. On
the left a statue of the Blessed
Mother Mary, donated by Mr. and
Mrs. William J. Heffernan of Au
gusta, and on the right, St. Jos
eph the Worker, from Mrs. Bessie
Sherling.
Architects for the new church
were Thomas and Hutton of Sav
annah with construction under
the direction of the John C. Mac
Donald Construction Company of
Augusta.

The Marist Brothers, now
teaching at Boys’ Catholic will
teach the boys at the new school,
while the Sisters of St. Joseph
will teach the girls

SAVANNAH, Ga.—William D.
McAlpin'was installed as worthy
faithful navigator this week to
head the slate of officers installed
at the meeting “of the Immaculate
Conception General Assembly,
Knights of Columbus.
Other officers installed were
Richard E. Lee, as faithful cap
tain; John F. Canty Jr., faithful
admiral; John Shearouse, faith
ful pilot; James J. Johnson, faith
ful inner sentinel; Peter Schuster,
faithful outer sentinel; and Wil
liam A. Kearney, faithful comp
troller.
Nicholas T. Stafford Sr., worthy
faithful master of the DeSoto
Province, Knights of Columbus,
was installing officer. He was re
cently reappointed to this position
for a period of two years.
The Rev. Thomas Brennan,
chaplain made a brief talk to the
members.
A steak supper was served by
the culinary committee composed
of John E. Buckley and Chris
Laird.
