Bazaar October 27th
NEW ORLEANS, (NC>— The
editor of the New Orleans arch
diocese newspaper said here that
he knows “of no.communist con
tact with the paper, either sal
aried or casual.”
His statement was prompted by
testimony in a newly published
report of the Senate Internal Se
curity Subcommittee headed by
Sen. James O. Eastland of Miss
issippi.
Released in Washington, the
327-page report is testimony given
at hearings held by the Senate
unit in New Orleans on April 5
and 6. The subcommittee said a
statement accompanying the re
port that a “smoothly coordinat
ed communist underground” was
operating in New Orleans as late
as this spring.
According to the report, papers
found in the room of a man al
legedly a communist organizer in
cluded a list of newspapers and
cryptic code names which the
subcommittee research
said “might mean his
with those papers.”
' The name of the Catholic Action
of the South, newspaper of the
Archdiocese of New Orleans, was
on the list. Five other papers
were listed in the testimony.
Millard Everett, editor of a
Catholic Action of the South, said
here that aftdr the subcommittee’s
hearings in New Orleans an “in
tensive check” was made of the
paper’s personnel back to 1940.
He said it was “possible the
party had a contact to get the
paper,” but no contact was ever
made, either through material
submitted, personnel employed,
approaches to staff or any other
way.
The reference to the Catholic
newspaper was found in
papers which the subcommittee
said belonged to a man known to
it as Hunter Pitts O’Dellf alleged
ly New Orleans district organizer
for the Communist party.
Mr. O’Dell did not appear be
fore the subcommittee during its
hearings in New Orleans. The un
it attempted to subpoena him,
but was unable to find him in
New Orleans. He later testified
in Washington. The subcommit
tee said his testimony, in which
Benjamin Mandel, research di
rector for the subcommittee, said
other papers allegedly belonging
to Mr. O’Dell included lists of
“weekly newspapers and broad
casting stations in Louisiana, the
principals in the St. Landry pa
rish (county) schools, a list of the
Methodist ministers, a list of :
Louisiana libraries, a list of Lou-1
