So Coexistence
is impossible
KOENIGSTEIN, Germany, (NC)
—“Communism rejects God and
therefore is not a culture,” de
clared Jesuit Father Anthony
Gundlach at a meeting of refugees
held under the sponsorship of ex
iled Bishop Boleslav Sloskans of
Minsk, Russia.
The theme of the meeting was
“The Church in Distress.” Its pur
pose was to examine the relations
between communism and the
Church. The participants includ
ed about four hundred people rep
resenting 26 nations, most of them
refugees from behind the Iron
Curtain.
The three points of discussion
were, coexistence of men, coex
istence of states and nations, and
coexistence of the Church with
human society.
People can coexist only if they
keep a certain internal unity and
peace brought about by religion,
science and arts as well as by
economics, Father Gundlach said.
But communism destroys this
peace and makes such coexist
ence impossible, he said.
Fear of power as a force, for
keeping peace among the nations
is inadequate and unworthy, the
priest declared. Nations must find
an ineologicial basis for coexist
ence or all attempts at achieving
it will be deceptive, he added.
As for the coexistence of the
Church with human society, Fath
er Gundlach pointed out that re
cent papal speeches have stressed
the fact that the Church cannot
identify herself with any cul
ture. Instead she collaborates—
and in that way coexists-—with
every culture. But, he continued,
communism is not a culture.
Therefore coexistence with com
munism in this sense is impossible.
Anyone preaches louder by his
square dealing than by shouting.
