Savannah Radio
Series Begins
November 4th
SAVANNAH, GA. — The Rev.
William P. Dowling will inaugu
rate a new radio series over
station WSGA on Sunday, No
vember 4.
Title of the series will be
“Talks with a Catholic Priest”.
The half-hour program will be
heard on Sunday afternoon at
2 p. m. for twenty weeks
M. Jordan Curran will appear
with Father on the program,
which will be based on the popu
lar book, “Father Smith Instructs
Jackson”. , . %

Georgia Contributes $7,200
To Peter’s Pence Collection
SAVANNAH, Ga.—In a letter
to the Most Rev. Francis E. Hy
land, Bishop, Elect of the Diocese
of Atlanta, the Holy See has ex
pressed gratitude for the contri
bution of $7,200 by the Diocese of
Savannah-Atlanta in the annual
Peter’s Pence collection.
The letter reads as follows:
Your Excellency,
The Supreme Pontiff has charg
ed me with the honoured duty
of directing to Your Excellency
this expression of His sincere ap
preciation and cordial gratitude
for the generous Peter’s Peirce
offering of $7,200.00 from ..the
Diocese of Savannah-Atlanta,
which you so kindly forwarded
to Him through the Apostolic
Delegation.
His Holiness daily receives ap
peals for assistance from the far
corners of the earth, from the
poor of Christ in . every land,
from heroic Bishops and priests
who are endeavouring to restore
Churches and schools destroyed
by the tide of war, and from self-
sacrificing missionaries who are
labouring assiduously to extend
the boundaries of Christ’s King
dom among' impoverished peoples.

vanni Cicognani, Apostolic Del
egate to the United States will in
stall The Most Rev. Francis E.
Hyland, D.D. J.C.D. as First
Bishop of Atlanta.
The ceremony is to take plaee
at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of
Christ the King, in the presence
of the Most Rev. Francis P. Ke-
ough, D.D., Archbishop of Balti
more, Metropolitan of the Balti
more Province.
Returning from England to par
ticipate and preach the sermon
will be the Most Rev. Gerald P.
O’Hara, D.D. J.U.D. Archbishop-
Bishop of Savannah and Apostolic
Delegate to Great Britain.
Bishop Hyland, a native of
Philadelphia, attended the pa
rochial schools of Our Lady of
Mount Carmel and St. Paul, and
the Roman Catholic High School,
all in Philadelphia. He entered
the Seminary of St. Charles BOr-
romeo, Overbrook, in September,
1918. He was ordained to the
priesthood in the Cathedral in
Philadelphia, June 11, 1927, by
the -late Most Rev. Michael J.
Crane, D.D., then Auxiliary Bish
op of Philadelphia.
He enrolled in the school of
Canon Law at the Catholic Uni
versity of America in September,
1926, and graduated with the de
gree of Doctor of Canon Law in
June, 1928.
After serving as assistant pas
tor of St. Aloysius Church, Potts-
town, Pa., St. Mary Magdalene
Church, Philadelphia, and St.
Margaret’s Church, Narberth,
Pa., Bishop Hyland became sec
retary of the Apostolic Delega
tion in Washington, in January,
1929, and served there for four
years under Cardinal Fumasoni
Biondi, and for almost six years.

ni Cicognani.
The Dignity of a Domestic Pre
late was conferred on Bishop Hy
land by the Holy See in 1933.
He was appointed pastor of the
Church of the Resurrection of
Our Lord, Chester, Pa., and Pro
moter of Justice of the Arch
diocese of Philadelphia, in Sep
tember, 1938. He was transferred
to the Church of Our Lady of
Lourdes in 1941.
In November of 1949 the Bishop
was named Auxiliary to the Most
Re.v. Gerald P. O’Hara, Bishop of
Savannah-Atlanta. In July of this
year, His Holiness Pope Pius XII
divided the state of Georgia into
two distinct Dioceses, the Diocese
of Savannah and the Diocese of
Atlanta, naming Bishop Hyland as
Ordinary of the newly created
diocese of Atlanta.
Bishop Reminds
Vigil Abolished
SAVANNAH, Ga.—In a let
ter to the clergy under date of
October, 22nd, His Excellen
cy, Bishop Hyland advises that
they inform the Faithful that
the Vigil of All Saints has
been abolished together with
its laws of fast and partial ab
stinence.
The Bishop reminds the
Faithful of this change, because
most of the Catholic calendars
for 1956 were printed far in
advance of the decrees of the
Sacred Congregation of Rifes
abolishing the Vigil of All
Saints.

zeal which the Sovereign Pontiff
Three Georgians have been presented the Papal Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice by His Holi
ness Pope Pius XII. Those honored are Robert S. Lynch of Atlanta, Dan J, Sheehan, and W. Kirk
Sutlive, both of Savannah. The honor has been bestowed in appreciation for their work in the re
cent Bishop’s Fund Campaign. The Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice was established by Pope Leo
XII in January, 1888. It is awarded by the Pope at the request of the Bishop to laymen who
continues in these troubled times. have rendered outstanding service to the Church.
