Notre Dame To Sponsor Lecture
By Father Gardner On Nov. 4th

Dame Book -Shop will sponsor a
lecture by the Rev. Harold C.
Gardiner, S. J., Ph.D. Literary
Editor of America Sunday, No
vember 4th, at 8 p. m. at the
Walter Hill. Auditorium, Atlanta
Art Association, 1280 Peachtree
St. N. E.
Father has chosen “Today’s
Literature and Christian Princi
ples” as his subject. The public
is invited and admission is free.
A native of Washington, D. C.,
Father Gardiner entered the So
ciety of Jesus in 1922. Classical
studies were at St. Andrew-on-the
Hudson, philosophical studies at
Woodstock College, Maryland, and
then a year of teaching English
and the Classics at Canisius Col
lege, Buffalo, New York.
Next came a year of ascetical
theology in Belgium followed by
two years of post-graduate work
in English at Downing College,
Cambridge, England. Advent of
War forced Father Gardiner to
return to the U. S. so after fur
ther study at Georgetown Uni
versity. with frequent consulta
tions with the English faculty at
Yale University, he was award
ed his Ph. D. in English from
Cambridge University, England,
in absentia.
Father Gardiner has lectured
on the current literary scene and
ranking first in the entire Catho
lic field of criticism, he is rated
well in the secular field.
Father Gardiner’s published
works include: Mysterie’s End
(Yale University Press); Norms
for the Novel, (America Press).
He has edited—Volumes I, II,
III, IV, The Great Books: A Cath
olic Appraisal (Devin-Adair); Fif
ty Years of the American Novel
(Charles Scribners’ Sons); The
Imitation of Christ (Hanover
House, 1955). The Imitation of
Christ is a modern version of the
Immortal spiritual Classic, and
has an introduction, also, by
Faeher Gardiner. Literary editor
of "America” since 1940. he is
editorial secretary of the Catholic
Book Club.
During recent years Father
Gardiner has achieved an envi
able reputation in Catholic liter
ary circles, and in the larger gen
eral field of criticism, as a per
ceptive critic of fiction. He is a
distinguished figure in the liter
ary world. His cultural back
ground and his broad experience
have brought him into promi
nence on the lecture platform.
He has lectured from coast to
coast.
