Andrew McDonald ATLANTA, Ga.—The luncheon honoring the newly installed Bishop of Atlanta was the scene of the announcement of the ap pointment of Atlanta’s Vicar General and of honors for the Rev. Andrew J. McDonald, Chancellor of the Diocese of Savannah. It was announced that Father McDonald has been designated by the Holy See as a Papal Cham berlain with the tittle of Very Reverend Monsignor. Father Mc Donald, a native of Savannah, has served for many years as Chancellor of the Diocese of Sav- annah-Atlanta, which post he will retain in the diocese of Savan nah. Bishop Hyland announced that the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph E. Moy lan, P.A., will be Vicar General of the newly created Atlanta Diocese. Msgr. Moylan is pastor of the church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Atlanta. Monsig nor held the office of Vicar Gen eral of the Savannah-Atlanta prior to his Atlanta appointment several years ago. Cathedral Packed As Apostolic Delegate Installs New Bishop ATLANTA, Ga.—The Cathedral I of Christ the King was filled with a rapt congregation of laity, priests and members of the hier archy for the ceremony of solemn installation of the Most Rev. Frapcis E. Hyland, as first Bishop of Atlanta. The former auxiliary-bishop of the diocese of Savannah-Atlanta was installed in the new See by the Most Rev. Amleto Giovanni Cicognani, S.T.D., Apostolic Del egate to the United States. Bishop Hyland was named Bish op of the newly created Diocese of Atlanta last July when the state of Georgia was divided into two distinct dioceses by His Holi ness Pius XII. The sermon at the mass was de livered by the Most-Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D.D. J.U.D., Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain, and Bishop of the Diocese of Savan nah. Archbishop O’Hara returned to this country from his London post to participate in the cere monies. Archbishop O’Hara called to mind tfye responsibilities and problems of a Bishop saying that St. Augustine often reminds us that we should pray for them. He stated that it is important “that the new Bishop always have con stant prayers and cooperation in ail that pertains to the church and the welfare of the church. The Apostolic Letters were yead to the Congregation in Latin by Monsignor Joseph G. Cassidy. Expresses Gratitude ATLANTA. Ga. — Address ing those present for his in stallation as First Bishop of Atlanta, The Most Rev. Francis E. Hyland stated that he had cabled the Holy Father ex- oressing the "Unwavering ad herence to the holy Catholic and Apostolic faith." In addressing his new flock, the bishop told Ih&m he was coming to them "not as a stranger, but of one who knew their problems." Bishop Hy land expressed his apprecia tion to Archbishop O'Hara for the priviledge of serving as his Auxiliary for the past seven years. "Years which have given me vital experience now needed as I assume the office of Bishop." The congregation was provided with english translations of the (Continued on Page 16) Archbishop Bids Farewell To Catholics Of North Georgia ATLANTA, Ga.—In the instal lation sermon delivered by the Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, Bish- ARCHBISHOP O'HARA op of Savannah, His Excellency stated that it was no easy decision “to cut myself off from the priests, religious and* laity of the northern part of Georgia.” Archbishop O’Hara in bidding farewell to the Catholics of the new Atlanta Diocese who were members of his “Flock” for twen ty years said the decision for the division of Georgia was a nec essary step in the further devel opment of the area. He called' the installation of Bishop Hyland “the most impor tant occassion in the history of the Catholic Church in north Georgia. The Archbishop conti nued saying the occasion was an indication of the progress the church has made throughout the whole South. “In the past 25 years,” he said “the Church in this area has grown by more than 300 per cent. This growth has been possible in large measure to the many converts to the Holy Faith of which Georgia has shar ed abundantly, the archbishop said. Archbishop O’Hara expressed his gratitude to the people of the new Diocese asking that they of fer their prayers for their new Bishop and begging the same co operation for Bishop Hyland that he had received as their Bishop.
