RELIEF URGED Becomes Superior Thornes Japanese
WASHINGTON (NC)—A reso
lution urging that the. people of
the free world provide relief for
Hungary and that the Internation
al Red Cross be given permission
to administer such relief was
adopted at a Freedom Rally held
here.

TOKYO, (NC) — Sister Eliza
beth of the Trinity (Teruko
Ogimachi) has. been named su
perior of the Carmelite convene
in Nishinomiya, near Kobe.
Sister Elizabeth is the first
Japanese Sister to be appointed
superior of a Carmelite convent
and she was the first Japanese
girl to become a Carmelite nun.

TOKYO, (NC) — Archbishop
Rufino Santos of Manila paused
here on his way to Manila from
Rome to thank Japanese officials
for 60,000 bags of cement they
sent for the reconstruction of
war-batttered Manila cathedral.
The project was organized by
Iwataro Uchiyama, prefect of
Kanagawa prefecture. The Ma
nila cathedral was practically de
stroyed by bombs in World War
II.

LONDON—(NC)For the second
Sunday in a row Poles and Hun
garians staged a procession
through this city and appealed to
the Prime Minister to help stop
the bloodshed in eastern Europe.
Following a second appeal by
His Holiness Pope Pius XII ask
ing prayers for the people of
Poland and Hungary, natives of
those nations residing in England
have gathered to pray for their
homelands. •

mingled with pleas for the safety
of the Hungarian Primate, His

Hungarians, some in national
costume, carried into the church
flags and sacred banners draped
in black. The demonstrators lined
the communion rail and dipped
the flags and banners in salute at

Polish vicar delegate to England,
offered the Mass and preached
the sermon thanking the British
for their support of Poland and
Hungary. ^
Msgr. Staniszewski criticized
communism, recalling the Poznan
riots and the “brutality of the
Russians in Budapest.”
He praised the “heroic courage”
of the bishops and clergy of both
countries, declaring: “There’s on
ly one enemy as always—com
munism. We pray for the heroes
of agony in Hungary.”

sands . . .”

Father Anton Molnar, chaplain
for 5,000 Hungarian exiles in Bri-

we grieve this night for the blood
of our countrymen at new bar-:

ribly ..proud of the heroism of , our
comrades.”

a four-hour vigil.
The Hierarchy of England and
Wales has named Sunday, De
cember 9, as a day of national
prayer for the Persecuted Church;
